A declining press missed the biggest story of the Labour Party conference
Several hundred journalists attend Labour Party annual conferences. So
where were they all at 5pm on the first day of this year's conference?

It was at that time that delegates agreed all Labour councillors must
pay a levy from their allowances towards party funds. Only today has
the matter come to light, following the resignation of a Sunderland
councillor.

He has asked police to investigate whether the compulsory levy - which
Labour advises council groups to get deducted at source - breaches laws
on party donations. Allowances come from taxes, he argues, and should
help with the costs of office (including lost income), not get a
political party out of a financial hole.

The press's failure to spot the story demonstrates everything that is
wrong with contemporary journalism
