I have a Sanyo VHR-H792E VHS Recorder and a Philips DVDR3380 connected to my TV (plus a Sky Box). Connections are via SCART leads. We haven't used the VCR for some months and when we tried to play a commercial (pre-recorded) tape today the picture is coming through "off track" and I can't get the tracking to correct. I've followed the instructions in the manual regarding tracking without success. This combination worked fine last time we played a tape and nothing has changed since. I've checked all the connections - all are well pushed in to their sockets. Anyone any ideas please? Thanks Peter

The book says the machine cleans heads each time a tape is inserted and no cleaning of heads is required. I did wonder about this - perhaps I'll buy a head cleaning tape and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion Peter

Most internal VHS head cleaners are little more than a foam roller that gets pushed onto the head for a second or so when a tape is inserted. They are most effective at ensuring all the heads are your machine are equally dirty as there's no way (unlike a head cleaning tape) they can actually take the dirt out of the machine. The foam has also been known to disintegrate and cause more damage than it ever cured!
