Component 720p HD possible?
I recently read an article stating the original X-box was capable of
producing 720p component output in NTSC
This confused me as I was under the impression that component was
limited to 480p in NTSC
Am I missing something because if this is right, why is HD considered a
new thing given the age of the X-box?

The original Xbox is indeed capable of HDTV (720p & 1080i) resolutions & some games are available in
HD but only in the US market. You connect with this cable

And only available on either an NTSC box or one which has been
chipped/soft modded to allow the region to be changed (the HD options
are only available on an NTSC dashboard).

Component connections have got enough bandwidth to support HD resolutions
1080i+. Most capable DVD players don't allow this (and the main reason HDMI
was invented) is because of security/copyright reasons. You can thank the
technical press and the manufacturers if they gave you the completely wrong
impression.

But component is analogue - isn't it?
HDMI was - I thought - invented to transport the digital picture & sound
through a nice neat cable

DVI came out to do the digital picture. Digital sound is/was available
through optical connectors.
HDMI was introduced to tie the two together in a "secure" way -ie.
restrict access. The only beneifit it brings is reducing the number of
wires (1 instead of 2).

Yes HDMI carries a 'Digital' (there's that magic word) video/audio signal,
and Component/VGA carries an 'Analog' signal, but the difference in signal
quality is not the primary reason it was implemented on modern appliances.
