Are Sky+ boxes all the same? Is one better than another?
Does it matter where you get it from (apart from pricewise)?

What size HD is best? I don't imagine we'd have much too much problem 
recording over what is already recorded (ie. probably doesn't need to be too 
big).

We already have Sky basic so no installation required.

I've got one in my loft that hasn't been used since I moved a couple
of years ago.
One of the original Pace jobbies. Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.

regular sky box uses.

Is it possible/ straightforward to do a DIY swap of the hd afterwards (to 
put in a bigger one)? Is that worth it?

most people will advise to avoid the amstrad - and say the pace is possibly 
the best.
as for hd size - if you get an older one with a small drive you wont get the 
anytime service - if that matters to you, even if you upgrade the hd 
yourself.
you'd do better to just get one of the new ones with a bigger hd - although 
you'll only have the use of half with the other reserved for the anytime 
service.

gen boxes, the type I've pointed you at. Earlier models, no matter how
big a drive you fit, will not work with this service.

gen boxes, the type I've pointed you at. Earlier models, no matter how
big a drive you fit, will not work with this service.

I've got one in my loft that hasn't been used since I moved a couple
of years ago.
One of the original Pace jobbies. Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.

most people will advise to avoid the amstrad - and say the pace is possibly 
the best.
as for hd size - if you get an older one with a small drive you wont get the 
anytime service - if that matters to you, even if you upgrade the hd 
yourself.
you'd do better to just get one of the new ones with a bigger hd - although 
you'll only have the use of half with the other reserved for the anytime 
service.

Is it possible/ straightforward to do a DIY swap of the hd afterwards (to 
put in a bigger one)? Is that worth it?

most people will advise to avoid the amstrad - and say the pace is possibly 
the best.
as for hd size - if you get an older one with a small drive you wont get the 
anytime service - if that matters to you, even if you upgrade the hd 
yourself.
you'd do better to just get one of the new ones with a bigger hd - although 
you'll only have the use of half with the other reserved for the anytime 
service.

gen boxes, the type I've pointed you at. Earlier models, no matter how
big a drive you fit, will not work with this service.

I've got one in my loft that hasn't been used since I moved a couple
of years ago.
One of the original Pace jobbies. Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.
