Where to get a SKY+ Box?
Are Sky+ boxes all the same? Is one better than another?
Does it matter where you get it from (apart from pricewise)?
What size HD is best? I don't imagine we'd have much too much problem
recording over what is already recorded (ie. probably doesn't need to be too
big).
We already have Sky basic so no installation required.

I've got one in my loft that hasn't been used since I moved a couple
of years ago.
One of the original Pace jobbies. Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.

Sky Basic didn't used to include a quad-LNB and two cables to the STB!

you'll still need install - sky+ requires 2 feeds rather than the 1 that the
regular sky box uses.

Ah right. Thanks.
So does it make a difference which Sky+ box I get other than HD size?
Is it possible/ straightforward to do a DIY swap of the hd afterwards (to
put in a bigger one)? Is that worth it?

most people will advise to avoid the amstrad - and say the pace is possibly
the best.
as for hd size - if you get an older one with a small drive you wont get the
anytime service - if that matters to you, even if you upgrade the hd
yourself.
you'd do better to just get one of the new ones with a bigger hd - although
you'll only have the use of half with the other reserved for the anytime
service.

Yes. There are three generations of Sky+ box (four if you include the
new high-def box), made by three different companies - Amstrad, Pace
and Thomson. Of these, Pace is considered the best manufacturer, with
Thomson second, Amstrad last. Sadly, as Sky have just bought Amstrad
you can guess which model you'll most likely get. For this reason I
recommend getting a box and fitting it yourself. It will mean changing
to a twin or quad LNB and running a second cable yourself, though. If
you're lucky you may have a satallite shop nearby that will supply and
fit what you want, which may be another way. Or you may find a sat shop
that will fit it for a fee if you buy the Pace box and get them to do
the dish and cable side of things.
http://www.simplydigital.co.uk/acatalog/Sky_Plus.html
I've bought two from the above folks and they've been flawless and
delivered them the following day. Good service, good company.
Once fitted it's just a matter of phoning up Sky, telling them you've
fitted a Sky+ and asking them to turn on the service. If you've got at
least one Premier package Sky+ is free. In fact I think it's now free
whatever.
> Is it possible/ straightforward to do a DIY swap of the hd afterwards

It is, but you'll void the warranty for the first year. The ones I
pointed you to above are the biggest you can get directly. They are
160Mb, of which 80Mb is reserved for Sky to download stuff to you called
Sky Anytime. Quite a handy service as you sometimes get Premier films
a week earlier than everyone else. This is only available on the third
gen boxes, the type I've pointed you at. Earlier models, no matter how
big a drive you fit, will not work with this service.

I've got one in my loft that hasn't been used since I moved a couple
of years ago.
One of the original Pace jobbies. Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.

you'll still need install - sky+ requires 2 feeds rather than the 1 that the
regular sky box uses.

Ah right.

Earlier models, no matter how
big a drive you fit, will not work with this service.

you'll still need install - sky+ requires 2 feeds rather than the 1 that the
regular sky box uses.

Ah right.

Don't know if i've got the remote
but I believe they still work ok with the latest software updates.

most people will advise to avoid the amstrad - and say the pace is possibly
the best.
as for hd size - if you get an older one with a small drive you wont get the
anytime service - if that matters to you, even if you upgrade the hd
yourself.
you'd do better to just get one of the new ones with a bigger hd - although
you'll only have the use of half with the other reserved for the anytime
service.

In fact I think it's now free
whatever.
