OT: Problem with TV
Its a LG RZ-42PX11. I've had it just over 3 years and it died this
morning. Powers up ok, but no picture, sometimes flashes some lines,
etc, but otherwise the screen stays black.
Has anyone had any experience with these? It's just outside the LG
warranty, and they dont want to know. I work on computers and
laptops, so I am not afraid to work on the inside of it, I just dont
know what is wrong with it.
Any help appreicated.
TIA

Just out of interest is it a CRT, LCD or Plasma?
I would think the 42 means 42" and probably plasma.
If plasma is this the expected life span of the screen?
I was talking to a Movie QA chap at the ITV in Birmingham and they replace
thier plasmas every 18 months.

Hi David,
Its a plasma. The expected lifespan of the tv is 30,000 hours. I use
it perhaps an hour a day, and I've maybe used it for a week or so in
the last month!

What about your supplier?
Once you got thier response, tell your local Trading Standards of that
response and LG's and how little you have used it and work on thier advice.

Unfortunately, it could be almost anything. In my experience, the
major cause of problems in electronic gear in general is dried out
electrolytic capacitors, often in the power supply. Or these days, dry
solder joints due to the lead-free solder that manufacturers are
forced to use. For some reason, power supply designers continue to put
electrolytic capacitors right up against hot transistors and
regulators - grrr!
Often you'll find that warming a capacitor up gives it a little more
capacitance or causes a bad solder joint to temporarily reconnect, so
you could try using a hair drier to heat up suspect areas and see if
that helps. That and a can of freezer spray might allow you to narrow
down the problem to a single area.

Once you got thier response, tell your local Trading Standards of that

My supplier has gone out of business, only last month tho...
Last time I tried TS they werent able to give me much advice. No
shops or repair places around here will touch it either, so kind of at
a loss!

Kind regards,
Ben

What about your supplier?
Once you got thier response, tell your local Trading Standards of that
response and LG's and how little you have used it and work on thier advice.
