Which PS3 version to get?
I'm not that close to the PS3 but as far as I can tell there is a 60GB and
40GB version? What would you guy's go for? Which one have you got?

60GB has been discontinued for some time so all you can do is get a 40GB or
a 60GB second hand, rumours are of an 80GB model at some point but not sure
when or if it will come. I have a 60GB but the 40GB model lacks only a few
things and is not really much different. All you lose is the limited PS2
backwards compatibility and a few ports.

Ta, yeah I thought it ws just the PS2 compat and the sd card reader etc. I
can live without that.

I've had it from before the 40GB came out, so I have the 60, but I'd
save the money and get the 40, as I don't use the hard disc for that
much. You can copy films onto the disc to watch, if your network
connection is bad, (IE, you only use wireless), but ordinarily, you just
stream media to it. So unless you really have the urge to dowload and
keep hundreds of game demos from the internet, you'll struggle to use
the 40, let alone 60/80GB.

My 360 only has 20GB and I never get close to the limit on that. It's not
the space I was concerned about it was just that I wondered if I would miss
something 'special' between the 40GB and the 60GB. Looks lke I'll get the
40GB as I'm not arsed about backwards compat and the extra ports. Shame the
bloody thing won't work with my Harmony remote though ;-(

Don't forget that most PS3 games install something to the hard disk. I've
seen quite a few that are multi-GB installs which will soon fill up the
disk.

Should you ever decide you do need more space, it seems like it's very
easy to replace the original 20GB with something bigger, it doesn't void
the warranty either and it even shows you how in the manual.
There's also a video on Youtube showing how to do it, just a matter of
unscrewing 5 screws putting a new drive in place of the old one.
I know some games have rather large installs, if you're going to do much
gaming.
GT5P took a while to install, so not sure how much space it took, but
then there was an immediate update require that I read somewhere was
1.5GB!!! and there's been another update for it since.
I've heard a lot of people say that the 60GB version can be noisy
(whether it's as noisy as a 360, I've no idea ).
Very happy with my 40GB, wouldn't even know it was on, even after a few
hours gaming and movie watching.
As for the remote, you can buy something now that'll plug into one of
the USB sockets and allow you to use a standard remote, no idea if it's
any good. I use my Harmony for everything else and just keep the PS3
bluetooth remote to hand for when I want to watch a Blu Ray.

I'll have to look into that usb remote add-on, sounds interesting. As for
hard drives am I correct in saying the PS3 takes a standard laptop hdd? I
have ready access to laptop hard drives so could just chuck one of them in
if that's the case.

I pretty sure the guy in the Youtube vid that I saw did mention it was a
standard 2.5" SATA harddrive, it might also have recommended one with a
certain rpm, can't remember off the top of my head though.

Oh yes, you download upgrades and such, but still, I think you are safe
with a couple of hundred games before you start to worry. Not all games do
some mad install, it's mostly just settings and prefs, and updates. Very
few install masses.

Yeah, everytime I need to dry clothes quickly I put the maiden in fron of
the 360!
Off to GameStation, see if I can spend some money. Keep thinking whether I
should wait for GTA4! ;-)

I think you're a bit optimistic there. GTA4 as an example takes 15 minutes
to install. Thats a bit more than just settings and prefs.

I keep hearing that GTA4 is pre-order only and most places have sold
their pre-orders weeks ago. Whether supply is being artificially limited
to increase the hype I don't know. I wouldn't have thought it would have
been too difficult to press another few hundred thousand copies (or as
many as were required) would it?

I currently only have 27GB free, apparently, despite only having three
games (GT5P, which is the big install and couple of big updates, MLB 08
and Singstar, with a few downloaded songs). Mind you, I've no idea of
that initial 40GB, how much is actually taken up by my games or if
there's a significant portion of the drive kept in reserve, like the
360. Of the 360s 20GB, I think you only get 12-13GB available for your
own use.

Nothing wrong with free publicity. They know what they're doing these game
companies when they make things in limited numbers on purpose. I've just
ordered a PS3 and GTA4 and I Am Legend (Gonna Ebay that after I've watched
it) for 329.99 off gamestation, didn't think that was too bad. I'm trying
to work out my cableage situation. Anyone know if the PS3 comes with
optical lead?

I'm sure there'll be plenty in shops come Tuesday. Mario Kart Wii had
similar 'sold out' notices everywhere online, but I walked into a local
store and bought it on release day without having to queue or beg or any
other hassle.
That said, my nephew paid 20euros in Xtravision for GTA4 preorder, but
only after taking his money did the manager tell him that he'll be on
the list for the 2nd batch.
I wasn't there at the time, but I would've had much to say to that
manager if I had.
I told my nephew to demand his money back straight away and if he's
refused tell the manager it was illegal for him to take money off him in
the first place for an over-18 game (he's only 13).

I need two optical cables and a HDMI to make it all work (360, SKY HD, Media
Centre, PS3). Luckily just found some spare one's in the garage ;-)

Is there an option to uninstall the hard drive components of a game you

You can still get the limited edition for the PS3 with the hoodie, bag and

Indeed. According to Rockstar, once the game is loaded you can play the

You can certainly delete stuff you aren't using from within the menu. I
assume this is the same as uninstalling, but there doesn't seem to be a
specific un-install command that I've seen.
