Plus cashback from Quidco....

Well, I'm tempted.

Betamax players cost about £400 back in the days that was the average man's
monthly salary. (or something)

£120 for a HD dvd player with 7 discs is eff all, and even if it does turn
out to be a dead duck format it's getting to the point where most AV
enthusiasts can afford to write off the cost of the dodgy investment. I
paid £150 for a CD writer once.

I paid £300 for a SACD / DVDA player when they first came out. Can this be
a worse investment?

Yup, it's a bargain. The 'free' movies are ok too.

Just as long as you don't want it to send Full HD Audio (e.g. DTS MA) via
HDMI to your Amp... (Very few players support this, even though they say
HDMI v1.3)

{shrugs shoulders} It looks like the format war is all but over, and HD
DVD lost, if you want the fun of getting this and few more bargins to
boot in the months to come, then why not? I was always tempted to get a
laser disc player, even though the format was well dead.

I got the Toshiba HD-EP30 (5 stars What Hi-Fi this month) £197, 7 free discs
and 1000 Tesco clubcard points.

Gorgeous machine.

Upscaling is VERY nice, and to be honest, it looks as if neither HD format
is actually selling too much.

I can wait for BluRay to get cheaper if I NEED HD, but I haven't found the
need to buy much these days!

What I like and want, I have on DVD, and with upscaling the difference is
going to be negligible...

So why bother!?

Re: HD DVD - Bargain ??
Me too.......I got the Tosh EP30 from Amazon a week or two ago for £190,
then last week they lowered the price to £150, and using some knowledge
gleaned from the interweb, I claimed back the difference.....

Then today, when they dropped the price again to just £120, I claimed that
difference back as well.....

Now THAT is a bargain......

(Just in case people didn't know, when you buy something from Amazon, if
they lower the price within 30 days, you can claim back the difference)

That, teamed with the PS3 I bought, covers me for both. To be truthful, if
their can be only one (notice the sly film reference) I would rather HD-DVD
won, but it looks as though blu-ray is going to be the victor......Sony
obviously don't want another drubbing after the betamax debacle (which I'm
too young to remember....honest)

You can't upscale detail that isn't there. as both a Blu-ray and HD-DVD
owner, I know nothing on DVD comes close, yes an image looks crisp and
nice, but the level of detail is still missing.

Hey I still have a Laserdisc player, and about 40 discs, many DTS titles
that are either not on DVD at all, or only have the half-bitrate DTS tracks.
They still rock!
I also have a Pioneer DVD player that supports SACD and DVD-Audio, they
sound fantastic (and my favourite band, Depeche Mode, have had all their
albums remastered in SACD 5.1 sound).

MiniDisc, get out of here. I wouldn't touch one of them with a barge pole.
I'll likely get Blu-Ray eventually, once prices are lower and the specs have
improved. HD-DVD will be gone by next year now that most major studios are
blu-ray only

I wouldn't be too bothered with the latest version of software (2.0) as the
only thing they can think to do with it is SPAM you with adverts related to
the disc.

Detail is fine... but it's the sharpness that does it for me.
And that's all that concerns me really.

A crisp image...

Gimme a documentary about Walkers and Golden Wonder and I'm blissful!
