There's clearly a lot of work been done on the Final Cut - the audio is
generally very effective, although some of the close conversational
scenes still sound clipped and distorted to me. Picture-wise, I thought
the picture very good - better than I remember, but then I haven't
watched the film for a while now.
<spoiler alert>
What I find disappointing about the Final Cut is that Deckard's
commentary is still missing. That means that when you watch the film,
you have that continual thread of disappointment, because you know that
it could be better. Oh, and the ending in the Final Cut is different
too, at compared to when I last watched the film.

I've seen the movie at least 6-8 times -mainly because I couldn't quite
get over the fact that I just didn't like it. It looks great and it has
everything that I would otherwise like in a movie, but it just never
clicked with me. Still, the one viewing I *did* enjoy to some degree was
the first time -which I saw with the voiceover.
When I watched it without the v.o. it all seemed vacuous and boring.
I've tried & tried, but I'm done with it now. I've since resigned myself
to the opinion that I just don't like any of Ridley Scott's films. Yes,
including Blade Runner and (last I looked) Alien too and (most
definitely) Gladiator.

Yes, the voice over was by far the best version as far as I am concerned!

got to say I prefer the voice over version too. It harks more to the old
days of the "gum-shoe" type noir movies which I think Blade Runner really is
an updated homage to. My opinion anyway. Having said that, the new copy is
stunning in both sound and vision. Well worth it, if you're undecided,
regardless of format

But surely you like Blackhawk down? If nothing else as an accurate
documentary of events? :)
Or was he just trying to do a remake of the film Aliens, except set in
Africa?

Yeah that's right, but personally I never had a problem with the voice
over, I thought it added a bit of a Bogart feel to the proceedings.
But I wouldn't get overly excited about the issue either way.

That settles it! In 1982 (or thereabouts) Starburst magazine (probably)
did a big article on Blade Runner going into the origins, the compromises
and ........the voice over. They slagged it off saying it was for mindless
American audiences who didn't get the plot and it seems people have been
repeating that parrot-fashion without engaging their own brains, ever
since.
Who's up for a "Voice Over Version Rules" T-shirt? :)

Well, don't forget to pay attention to the part where Captain Dallas meets
the Alien in the airshaft and it thrusts out its wibbly wobbly rubber hands
at him.... and the scene doesn't end.... and the rubber gloves are still
wobbling....

LOL.
Yes.
But to be fair, it's been possibly 10 years since I last saw it so maybe
I'd like it if I saw it now. I don't think I'll be bothering to find out
though. It's taken enough time from me. Not that it's a bad film -it
just does nothing for me.
I saw The Duellists for the first time this year. I thought it was quite
good. That's now possibly my "favourite" Ridley Scott film.

I know you're joking, but I saw enough of that movie in previews and,
along with my knowledge of where its coming from, made an executive
decision to not bother with it.
It seems to me that Ridley is one of those rarities who gets a free
pass, whereby *everyone* needs to at least watch all of his movies at
least once.. for some reason.
Don't question The Scott!
American Gangster is the first one of his I've seen in a while. While
it's very nice technically, and somewhat more grown-up/ mature (as
opposed to knotted-brow/ overly serious) than most of his other stuff, I
still didn't get a sense of a coherent, involving plot or anything that
would help me decide there was anything there actually worth watching.
Instead, the only thing I could think when watching it is how much it
pales in comparison to the tv series, The Wire. That's not totally fair
since The Wire has many seasons to tell its (excellent) story, but still
there seemed too much to tell in American Gangster in such a short time
that by the end it really didn't show/tell very much of anything.

Fair comment - its pretty good in my view, and looks rather lovely (as I
suppose do most of his films). And its certainly a salutory lesson in how
not to break bad news to somebody with a sabre. :)
Alien I think is cracking, but I actually prefer Aliens as I like war
movies but don't really like horror.
Thelma and Louise didn't make a huge impression, I enjoyed Gladiator, but
I was never quite clear on how he duffed up the Praetorians at the
beginning, and it felt a bit like a Star Trek episode to me where Kirk has
been captured and is being made to fight in the arena. Not that that's a
bad thing, necessarily.
Black Hawk Down is basically Aliens, and while I enjoy a well made action
movie (and it is) this feels a bit "wrong" given that it is recent history
being portrayed through star spangled filters. Go to the corner Ridley, do
not collect your credibility points.
I can fully understand people not really liking Blade Runner, but for me
its a tense, exciting story, with some unusual takes on its themes, hero
gets smacked around by a woman, hero shoots woman in back, hero physically
pushes heroine around before having his way with her, hero is no match for
any of his enemies, - and some genuinely influential visual styles. And
while Harrison Ford may hate the film and his performance, I love it. He's
almost an empty vessel, a loser - but being HF he carries it off, and the
contrast with Rutger Hauer's insanely cool performance is magical (for me).
:)
And then there's Leon......
And Holden's scene.....
And Sebastian, Pris and Roy's scene.....
And Roy and Tyrell's scene....
And.....
And.....
:)
All the best,
Angus Manwaring. (for e-mail remove ANTISPEM)
