I've only watched disk 1 - the new remastered version of the film , and it's
bloody lovely.

Cracking picture and sound and a nice cut of the film too.
I've seen it four or five times before over the years and can't remember all
of the changes between versions , but this is certainly very enjoyable.

The packaging looks great and apparently the extras are well worth a look.

It's freaking great, the blu-ray version arrived from the states this
morning, oh to have the workprint version on Blu-ray, that alone makes
me want to fondle my man bits for hours on end.

No hi-def for me either. Yet.
But, something I've been meaning to check for some time... I know HDDVD
is technically backwards compatible with DVD, but... is it?
Do all HDDVD discs contain a version of the contents that are playable
on standard dvd players? Do any of them?

No, the players themselves (both HD-DVD and Blue Ray) have
the ability to play their own discs, plus ordinary DVDs. But no
DVD players can play an SD version of anything HiDef.

Hehehe.

I bought a nice 32" CRT tv about 3 years ago when flat panels were very
expensive and didn't offer brilliant picture quality.
That's changed a fair amount to the point where I can buy one with a good
picture for my potential budget , but I don't have a PS3 or X-BOX 360 and
have no intention of paying for Sky HD , so it's not really worth the effort
now.
I'll probably get one next christmas or thereabouts.

locking their Blu-Ray

Seriously considering buying the 360 add on drive with my xmas money and
when i get my 1080p tv with my 10th wedding anniversary money (missus
gets and eternity ring - i get gadgets!) I'm pondering getting a ps3
too.

tempted by the 360 add on especially for the new star trek boxset
especially as the discs are hd-dvd/dvd hybrids

I have both, and I just don't like the quality of the display on the 360,
the PS3 is a hands down winner in my books, but if you have specific titles
that force your hands, I think that is more important when it comes to your
choice.

films on blu ray and hd dvd are stored as 24fps images.
it's down to your player whether they are output that way - and your tv
needs to be able to accept such an input too to take advantage.

well the eventual aim is to at some point build a quiet multimedia pc
and use the 360 add on with that rather than my 360 :)
