While this is all OK in America, where Project Gutenberg are based, you
really ought to be aware that British copyright law is VERY different,
and that a lot of the stuff on this disk is still covered by it.

An impressive list, but are you sure that something out of copyright in
the USA is also out of copyright in the UK? I recall something about the
old US system allowing some material to drop out of copyright while the
author was still alive (some renewal option not being taken up) while
the UK system was life plus 50 years (a term now extended).

Some of those authors could easily be still in copyright, but I don't
know how US status affects UK status.

True the EU is now on life plus 70 whereas the US is on pre 1922 with a
requirement to renew the copyright. Which is comparatively rarely done.
All copyright law is *very* complex.

I will take the very slight risk.

I will also copy your post to a PG private list.

Yes, they're not in copyright in the US, and that's where PG are based.
But some of these books etc. have never been out of copyright in
Britain, and rights in them are actively defended by the copyright
holder - Wells is the most obvious example. The copyright holders can't
stop PG, but they can sure as hell take legal action against you if they
become aware of what you're doing.

Yes, they're not in copyright in the US, and that's where PG are based.

An impressive list, but are you sure that something out of copyright in
the USA is also out of copyright in the UK? I recall something about the
old US system allowing some material to drop out of copyright while the
author was still alive (some renewal option not being taken up) while
the UK system was life plus 50 years (a term now extended).

Some of those authors could easily be still in copyright, but I don't
know how US status affects UK status.

An impressive list, but are you sure that something out of copyright in

old US system allowing some material to drop out of copyright while the
author was still alive (some renewal option not being taken up) while
the UK system was life plus 50 years (a term now extended).

Some of those authors could easily be still in copyright, but I don't
know how US status affects UK status.
