It's gotten quiet again...
Since we aren't talking about anything else, anybody want to write an
Anime Primer entry or two for me? I've got a little wish-list:
<http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/primer/pre-approved.html>
(Note the second-to-last paragraph: "A particularly energetic and
knowledgable volunteer is sought to re-write the entry for Gundam, so
that it better reflects the multiplicity of continuities of that
franchise. Splitting the entry into multiple entries by continuity is
acceptable.")
Replies here or to my gmail address, please...

Hmmm, I don't know most of those. But I'll see if I can write something about
Whisper of the Heart.

Could that possibly be aimed at a particular and well known member of this
group by any chance? ^_^ ^_^

Thanks. Don't feel constrained by that list; I'll be happy to get any
on-topic content I can for the Primer.

Hmm, I could do a write up of The FIve Star Stories, but it would be a
lot easier to just put in a link to the GearsOnline section for FSS
and it is written by people who are much more knowledgable than I on
the subject...
http://www.gearsonline.net/fss/
That should do the trick :)

Here's one for Ichigeki Sacchu! HoiHoi san
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Ichigeki Sachuu! HoiHoi san. (One-Shot Insect Killer! HoiHoi san)
In the future insects have become resistant to chemicals so Japanese
robotics companies have turned to producing small pest-killing robots.
Being Japanese they're small *cute* pest-killing robots. Meet ID-3
HoiHoi san, six inches of heavily-armed insecticidal sweetness you can
buy nice outfits and weapons upgrades for at your local pharmacy (all
major credit cards accepted).
Based on a manga and a later PS2 game, this short ten-minute anime was
made to go with a manga collection released in 2004. Squeaky boots,
plasma beam rifles, matsuri doll outfits and exoskeletal carnage, what's
not to like?

Hmm... there's a couple in there that I'm surprised aren't covered. OK,
I'm game!
THE DAGGER OF KAMUI (KAMUI NO KEN)- A tale of intrigue that surrounds an
abandoned child, Jiro, who was supposedly orphaned but, after being chased
from his adoptive parents' home for a crime he did not commit, he is taken
in by the sinister priest, Tenkai, taught the craft of the shinobi and
given a number of clues as to his real identity. During his adventures, he
discovers the truth behind his abandonment, his parents and, importantly,
his mentor Tenkai who proves to be far more sinister than just another
buddhist monk as Jiro runs inexorably toward his destiny, guided by his
past and a mysterious dagger. Released as a sub from AnimEigo in 1993.
-
HAKKENDEN (DOG WARRIORS) - Adapted from a "200 year old classic", this is
a story about a group of warriors drawn together by a common bond. Each
reluctantly battles in a quest to break a curse dating back to a moment in
history when a clan leader attempted to save his people by marrying his
daughter off to his dog but, following a bungled rescue attempt, the happy
couple are both killed! A little slow to start as much exposition is used
to set out the background to what eventually happens later on but worth
working through. Released originally by Pioneer LDC.
-
PERFECT BLUE - What happens to idol singers when they stop being idol
singers? Mima is a popular singer but wants to move on to something else
and lands a part acting in a popular TV drama. However, idols have otaku,
and Mima's otaku seem to be a little more violent than most. Who is
sending the booby trapped threat letters? Who is the mysterious deformed
man, and who is behind the website "Mima's Room"? It all nearly drives
poor Mima over the edge...
A psychological thriller with a twist at the end that will keep you
guessing as the body count rises. And you won't believe the twist!
Released (at least in the UK, but I suspect in the US too) by Manga Video.
-
I'm currently wading through Seto No Hanayome but I'll leave that for now.
Anyway, this should keep you going for a little while! ^_^

Some of the existing entries need updating -- Aria for one. There's
been a complete new third anime series and the source manga has recently
finished publication. There are errors in the description too -- for
example the second series (The Natural) is 26 episodes long, not 13. The
first series (The Animation) has been licenced by RightStuf, coming out
in September this year.

I'm amazed you don't have a Haruhi one, how about "Cynical boy meets
petulant scamp, mayhem ensues."
Here's an entry for you, it's not on your list but its not in the Primer
either. Fansubbing of it by Anime Faith & Shining Fansubs took over a year
and was only finally completed when members of several other fansub groups
stepped in and did most of the work as they felt the series deserved it.
WINDY TALES
Nao is a keen photographer who loves photographing the ever-changing sky.
Whilst on the school roof one day indulging her pastime, she sees something
impossible: a flying cat. Nao is so surprised that she falls off the roof,
but instead of plummetting to her death, a sudden surge of wind slows her
fall so that she lands unharmed. WTF is going on? Haunted by the memory of
her near-death experience, Nao is determined to find out, but first she has
to quash rumours that her four-storey fall was a suicide attempt.
Despite being ostensibly about people (and cats!) who can manipulate the
wind, Windy Tales (aka Fuujin Monogatari) is really a series of tales about
growing up: young people being initiated into the adult world and adults
regretting the loss of their carefree youth. The visual style is unusual
for anime: the characters look Japanese, with their small black almond
eyes, and the drawing style is bold and simple, like a crude watercolour
painting. However this appearance is deceptive: the animation itself is
subtle and fluid, and the rural landscapes are beautiful. 13 episodes.
Originally broadcast in 2004-5. Made by Production I.G.

Thanks.
I'm seriously considering dropping the availability information - it's
so much work to keep current with all the series re-licencing, company
closures and startups, region differences (R1, R2, & R4 all have
English-language anime companies), and fansub sources...

Despite owning a copy of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I don't really
*like* the show... but I don't really *like* Evangelion, either, and
it's in the Primer. I suppose I should add Haruhi to the Pre-Approved
list.

Oh, right - "Haruhi" was already on the Pre-Approved list. But a few
other shows weren't... I've removed "Dagger of Kamui", "Hakkenden",
"HoiHoi-san", and "Perfect Blue" from the Pre-Approved List, and added
"Moyashimon", "Lucky Star", and "Spice and Wolf". (I'm tempted to add
"Rental Magica" as well, but that's personal preference rather than
recognition of artistic merit. So I didn't. But if somebody *wants* to
write a Primer entry for the show, well...)
I've also added a note asking people wait until a show is finished its
first airing before writing an entry for it. (While I have little doubt
that "Crystal Blaze" and "Daughter of Twenty Faces" will both end up in
the Primer, there's always a miniscule chance that either or both of
those shows will crash and burn in their ending arcs.)

What's not to like is that there is only one episode.

That is far more information than is needed to uniquely identify FSS.

It's sweet but it's a one-shot joke. I can't really see the concept
carrying a series, sad to say. A full-length 25-minute OAV maybe, with
better animation (or a real budget) would be nice. As long as they keep
the squeaky boots I'll be happy. And the plasma beam rifle. OK, the
squeaky boots AND the plasma beam rifle. And the matsuri doll outfits.
Okay the squeaky boots, the...
According to Wikipedia which is never wrong there's a spinoff manga
series being published, "Ichigeki Sacchu!! HoiHoi-san Legacy".
Oh, and for all the CoM squee-boys out there, apparently Combat-san's
code number RRX-7.8 is a backhanded Gundam reference. Given the number
of times she falls over and catches fire, I'm not really surprised.

Thats not "apparently", thats "as subtle as dropping a space colony on
Sydney". "RX-78" is the original Gundams type number, as I'm sure

From memory?
I recall a film quiz program on radio where the expert was asked "For
two points, how many movies did the Marx brothers make?". He answered
correctly, thirteen I think. "And for another two points, name them."
And he did, but he was straining by the end of the list.

While I would agree with you that a series in the classic sense would
be tricky, I suspect it may be possible to develop it far enough to
produce a few model 10 minute episodes spread over a long period (i.e.
not weekly, but maybe bi-monthly).

Also according to Wiki, the whole thing started off with a manga. And
I've just ordered a copy from Amazon...

Is that the Infinity Studios English-language translated edition?
http://tinyurl.com/6r3qty
I've just ordered one from my local comics shop. Apparently it was in
the Diamond catalogue in March this year, and the counterdroid reckoned
they could get it in for me. In for me! In for me! They've all got it in
for me!
I did manage to find a scan of the original Japanese manga on
BitTorrent coughcough although from what I understand the owners of the
Hoihoi-san property have been megahot about stomping on black-market
doings of this sort.

That's the one.
And Amazon being Amazon, it was delivered today. I haven't had a chance
to start on it yet, although a quick flick through showed some fairly
unexpected scenes, like a HoiHoi-san the size of a house!

The ID-4 "life-size" model, yes? Beautiful plumage!
I'd like to pick up one of the limited-edition dolls when I'm in Japan
in August but from what I gather they're rare and the price is up there
in lights.

HoiHoi-san vs. Godzilla? For some strange reason, I'm reminded of
"Bambi Meets Godzilla"... <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064064/>
Then, again, this *is* HoiHoi-san. It might be more like "Son of Bambi
Meets Godzilla". <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437480/> ^_^

That's "life-size" the way that Richard Kiel is life-sized - definitely
larger than the average cute insect exterminator.

There's a photo of the doll (sitting on a telephone, IIRC) in the manga.

If the doll has squeaky boots, I will pay any price.

I have encountered a number of unusual fetishes in my time as an anime

[1] Yes, I am aware that I might be considered to have one myself...

Is this tantamount to saying "If it walks by itself, I will pay any

Maybe, but BM has Noriko and Kazumi, who survived being in the near
proximity of a galactic-size black hole collapse. If they can survive
that, they can even survive Tomino.
