We had 2 games (2 matches in each game) and as much as I hate to say
it, he owned me in 3 out of 4 matches. Still, sitting in a pod
piloting a MS-06J Zaku was rather cool and besides, I would have
destroyed the enemy's base had I not been spotted shooting ping pong
balls at it for 5 minutes.

Mappy did not survive and become NewType. Well, neither did I but I
did at least earn an upgrade to a Gogg.

Well done Justin. ^_^

Mappy introduces me to his Japanese friends as "Justice-San". Has a
nice ring to a title, doesn`t it? ^_^
Incidentally, we met something of a Gundam fanboy here. He told me
that "I know my stuff" when it comes to Gundam. Go on, act surprised.

Here's a scary thought, so have I! The Catgirl Commission now have
pilots!
Well, not that we fly well, we're only 1/4 the skill of the CoM so we
need 4 times as many pilots as you to be on a level footing.
Oh, Justin's friend, Yamada, who's a Judo master and maths teacher
here in Niigata asked "If the Gundam pods were all in Japanese, how
did he work out how to play the game so well?" I told him, "Natural
instinct I think."

In this case, doesn't "1/4 the skill" mean "miss 1/4 as often"? ^_^

Button mashing. It'll get you a win every time.

Heh, it did feel disturbingly destined. ^_^ Not that I would argue,
anyway, Yamada-san makes the average tank look like Walter the Softy...
For those wondering: the game-play of the new Gundam game is the same
as every Gundam game Bandai has released for the past twenty years.
You walk around, spot a target, then hit it with your heat hawk or 120mm
machine gun until it blows up. The difference is the environment - you
sit, fully enclosed, in what is basically a full-on Mobile SUIT cockpit,
one complete with a headset to communicate - or in one particular pilots
case, tell the useless catgirl stooge to get the hell out of the way -
with your allies.
Yes, this does mean you can say stuff like "Justice-san, Zaku,
HASSHIN!" when the mission starts.
Also, before you start, you have to get your Mobile SUITs pilot
licence. This card records the game data, and the more you play, the
more you a) feed even more yen into Bandais ever-hungry coffers and b)
earn nicer Mobile SUITs to hit people with.
A few notes from Japan:
1) There is now coconut Pocky. Rejoice.
2) Japans internets apparently run on the Eye of Harmony. They are the
*quick*.
3) There is something called the Bandai Channel, available at internet
cafes. Classic mecha shows, 24 hours a day. Its just as well I didn't
find this out until a day before I left...
4) We spent some time in a place called Sakai-Minato. Good luck finding
it in the Lonely Planet. The local industry is GeGeGe Kitaro. They have
eyeballs on lampposts.
5) Japan does not love Turn-A. No-one loves Turn-A. This makes me sad.
6) If you don't talk about the Maid Cafe I won't mention a certain
persons sense of direction...

I just got a letter from Virgin Media, telling me that as of next month
they will experimenting with 500Mbs; if I went for this, it would mean
that the slowest part of the network would be my 100Mbs router.
Unfortunately, they didn't give any indication of the likely price 8-(

It is quite possible that the router is measured in bytes and I am
certain that the broadband is measured in bits. That would men your
router is still a lot faster than your broadband :)

He's still big with rippling muscles. If there was ever a nemesis for
the CoM and CGC, it's him as I don't think either of us could swing
him to our respective sides.

Yup, same as always (apparently) but with the added bonus that you're
actually big enough to stomp around on your enemies and see them
crushed under your foot (well, you would be if they put a screen under
your feet.)
> Yes, this does mean you can say stuff like "Justice-san, Zaku,

Yes but you need your voice to break again or develop bronchitis
before you sound cool :D I, however, use my karaoke voice and launch
like a furry who's just got a mecha for their birthday :D Your worst
nightmare has arrived!

I have just returned to Tokyo from Niigata where it's actually cold! I
have a week before I return. I deserve another trip in a mecha.

I'm still wondering how to get that 2meg a second connection :( Now
that you've left, everywhere I go is reducing their torrent speeds you
b!%$$B!r(B"d! I knew the CoM was behind this!
> 3) There is something called the Bandai Channel, available at internet

Just as well really as we didn't have much time for dilly dally.
> 4) We spent some time in a place called Sakai-Minato. Good luck finding

This place rocks. It's weird, querky and you'd be lucky if you saw any
tourists (which, on one occasion, we did.)
> 6) If you don't talk about the Maid Cafe I won't mention a certain
> persons sense of direction...
Good point, I've got no sense of direction and we got lost on many
occasion as a consequence including one time going up an unscheduled
mountain (no joke here.)
Just arrived back in Ueno and found the "Wired Cafe" downstairs in
Ueno station (can't find Lain though) who has free internet (just
grabbed one torrent at 255Kb/s) and can finally write my e-mails after
a few days in the sticks AGAIN!
Things I've learned about Japan as I wind down over the next 6 days:
1) Girls in Niigata and Nagaoka are better looking than those in Tokyo
(IMHO.)
2) 6 year old girls know Seirei no Moribito.
3) Going up a cobbled mountain path with a 30 degree slope when you
have trouble walking straight is not a good idea but strangely fun.
4) Going up a sand dune with a 70 degree slope when you have trouble
with your legs is not a good idea but strangely fun.
5) Travelling long distances increases your chances of getting lost at
any one point.
6) Mario Kart arcade is very good.
7) Flying in a Gundam pod is great fun and I want to go again but the
true joys of which are lost on people like me!
8) Don't get on the bad side of a judo master.

Nah. It's a standard 10/100 Mbs router. As a consequence of which... I
have just been looking at the costs of gigabit routers, and they are
surprisingly affordable[1], so the problem may not be insuperable 8-)
[1] I remember when gigabit-rated network components started at about
£2000 and went up from there very quickly.
