Somehow I seem to recall that it was only the cheapo VCRs that did NTSC on PAL.
I don't think I ever saw the facility on any of the more expensive models.

At least one of the big Mitsubishi recorders did. I remember when I went to
buy a new recorder, I took an anime tape with me. That resulted in the
purchase of my recently departed Mitsubishi machine. Nice machine, but the
tape carrier mechanism was very prone to wearing out.

It seemed to get more prevalent as the years went on. When I first bought
my Aiwa MS350S, it didn't seem that common at all and the first machine I
had that could do it needed a TV with variable frame rate which was also
difficult to find back then. These days I have a Thomson VPH7090, a pretty
old system by now, for VHS to DVD conversions through a Dazzle unit though
I did look around at some of the current offerings and it seems that NTSC
playback is fairly standard these days.

My Mitsubishi bit the dust in last year's floods, I've bought a new VCR (and
they're hard enough to find today) and I've just realised that I've not
tried it on an NTSC tape yet. I'll have to check to see if any NTSC tapes
survived.
