I didn't quite go that far, actually I didn't know of anywhere that would do
NTSC -> PAL conversion.
I didn't start buying NTSC tapes until I'd brought a VCR that had an NTSC on
PAL playback facility.

I remember picking up a cheapo VCR and discovering when I got it home that 
played NTSC. It wasn't even mentioned in the manual, that was a happy day 
^_^
