Come to think of it, what we paid for our anime back then doesn't bear thinking
about by us! ^_^

Agreed!
We used to buy NTSC vids despite not having a NTSC player. Luckily there was
a shop around the corner that would convert the tapes to PAL for £12 per
hour.
That actually seemed to make sense at the time as well...

Going to Shin nen kai - '98? was it? Anyone remember the quiet guy from
Devon trying to hide in his own skin? - and seeing NSTC tapes of
Escaflowne (I think) set me down the path of acquiring one of those
players for my own, a road that had led to me having to learn more about
various international TV, input, and codec types than I ever wanted to
know... ^_^
(The other great revelation was seeing Ben Carters AEGIS system in
action at Minamicon, which is where I got my first glimpse of the power
of digital media... )

My main memories of the second Shin (98) was the static shocks off nearly
everything I touched...
And catching that awful flu bug that was going around.
Who was the Quiet chap from Devon? I must have missed that one...

That was me. ^_^ I was - still am to an extent - not an overly
confident person at that time, and it took me two days to sort of get
over the shock. A few more conventions, though, and even I was singing
"Fly Me To The Moon" badly... ^_^

Can't remember which year it was I went, but I only went once. Spent a lot
of my time chasing Eva eps around the hotel.

That was the guy with the big sign pointing at him with "from Devon"
written on it? ;)

My memory is never a reliable tool, but yep, I did go to a Minami very
shortly afterwards. And Fly Me To The Moon has the advantages a) its the
only song I can remember the words to and b) its in English. ^_^

Ahh, Shinnnnnn 98, one of the later cons. :)
I remember (but only just young whippersnapper you!) going to AD1!!!!
Myself and a friend of mine planned the entire day out, running from
room to room to catch the start of the next item in the programme, so
that we didn't miss anything. Ah those were the days! :)

I've got a lot of fond memories of the earlier cons, they did seem to be
more fun. Perhaps because it was all new and there was lots to discover.
I think getting a prize for our Dirty Pair costumes at one of the
Contanimateds is going to be permanently etched on my memory...

And, I rather suspect, everyone elses... ^_^
I think I've said this before, but if there is one thing I do miss
about a hobby that has improved in so many almost
impossible-to-comprehend ways its the air of mystery. It was a real
moment of happiness when some treasure from that strange, remote, alien
wonderland known as Japan some how escaped across the Pacific and found
its way onto a collision course with my curiosity. There used to be a
small comics shop in Exeter (not Krackers/Ace Comics) that used to have
a small stock of mecha model kits. I recognised the designs from playing
BattleTech, but they had Japanese writing all over them.
Many years later later, I found out about Dougram...

Well said that man!
When we started getting into anime there seems to be a magic about finding
out about it - a bit like Jack Skellington discovering christmas...
Our local model shop in Hull had some "Zamac" kits in about '83 - for 99p
each. I knew the guy who ran it and as I'd bought the lot, he gave me a load
of posters and promtional bumf.
I wasn't Otakuised them, I just knew they were Japanese and sci-fi,
therefore worthy of my interest...

Thinking about it probably not...
To your great relief (and many others people's I'm sure) I gave up on the

I wish I could have seen the faces of the people you showed my pic to...

A friend of mine regularly goes over to Japan and does a British sunday
lunch for them while he's there. He also showed a gathering of 40 something
Japanese ladies the fine art of biker dancing...
BTW, our friend's son-in-law is an architect and designed his own house. The
living room is separated from the garage by a glass wall, so you can look in
at the F1 Racer, the Diablo and the Ferrari...

I think this is also why I've been hungering after older series
recently - they're not as promoted as much and the fanbase has to have a
degree of interest (in other words, I'm saying that mecha fans are
maniacs... ^_^) beyond just liking the look of a series.

You know you've been a mecha fan too long when you start searching the
web for this legendary lost giant robot series "ZAMAC" and find instead
its a line of model car kits... ^_^

I get quite spooked sometimes thinking about how I feel I might have
been primed from a very early age; my favourite cartoons when I was
young were all the Japanese-involved ones, like Battle of the Planets
and Cities of Gold. I nearly had a heart attack when I discovered the
true origins of Star Fleet... ^_^

I'm probably walking into a running gag here, but the only other time I've
seen a Zamac kit was a couple of years ago at a con. Was it actually a
series?

I can't seem to tell. When I input "Zamac" into Google I got a load of
car kits, so I assumed the joke was on me, although the term does ring a
very vague bell in the collective mecha fan consciousness [1]...
...ah, yes:
http://www.cg-lair.co.uk/other/other_pic231.htm
I must have seen it somewhere, possibly at Macross World. Apparently,
no, there wasn't a series, presumably because the Bandai
Death-Copyright-Star would have blown them off the face of Japan.
Apparently, mecha design legend and head-of-Section-9-in-his-spare-time
Shinji Aramaki was involved.

Ah thanks for the info. I remember the five pilots featured on the box art
fitted the standerd "team", i.e. leader bloke, female, slightly dangerous
bloke, wierd sqeaky of undetermined gender and hefty bloke. Having seen
"Battle of the Planets", at the time, I naturally assumed the kits must be
based on a series.

You're welcome. I wonder what the other designs looked like, and if
they escaped to the West under different guises, like certain
Transformers and Revells pre-Robotech "Convertors" kits...

Well I bought all five original kits, and as I said I got a load of promo
bumph with them. Amongst the bumph was a double sided poster one side
showing the mechs in an "action" group pose and the other side had a cutaway
view of each mech. I gave it away a year or so later under pressure from my
then girlfriend to "grow up".
I remember a sixth mech "Run-Valam" was released about 6 months later. I've
literally just Googled that and found a site on the Japanese Wikipedia that
listed the mechs:
JE-01 (JHAU-ZAMAC)
ZF-31 (VA-GAL)
YA-25 (JHA-GIGA)
XS-14 (DA-WEB)
YP-23 (MA-DRUM)
Later releases:
ZS-86 (RUN-VALAM) a wierd three legged thingy
(DHA-GARDS) - I'd forgotten this one it was a sort of cut price AT-AT.
MA-92 (GERWALK HARRIER)
FB-40 (GERWALK PHANTOM)
Never saw the last two in our local model shops...
Even better, I've just found a site with some of the boxes! -
http://necton.egoism.jp/megaro.htm
and http://billgates.egloos.com/3505818
Looking at those, I can lay to rest a ghost from my past ^_^

Buggered if I know...
I think it means stopping doing everything you enjoy.
I bumped into her a few years back. She asked what I was doing, "Learning
Japanese" came the answer. "Oh" she said "So you're still doing wierd stuff
...."
One of my recent ex-girlfriends was quite the reverse - i.e. a bigger fan
than me. She got obsessed by "The Lord Of The Rings", she still has a
profile on a celebrity look-a-likes sites as a Frodo/Elijah Wood
look-a-like...

Glad you liked it ^_^
Hull model shops got some really cool Japanese kits in the early 80's. I had
quite a few Robotech kits, I was quite partial to the Armoured Valkyrie,
although I haden't a clue what it was ^_^
I also had a mech repair bay diorama which I thought was the mutt's nuts.
