There are no old, bold anime fans...
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/manga/manga.php?manga_view=3318
...just old, bald anime fans. ^_^
This is the sort of thing that makes me realise just how long I've been
interested in my hobby; I remember reading about this book in Anime UK
magazine and regarding it as a treasure which my sweaty Western hands
would never, ever touch. And now I could walk virtually into Amazon and
buy a copy.
Kids today, don't know they're born with their anime named after
household cleaning products and their bishonen Gundam pretenders
muttergrumblemutter...

<grin> I have this book in my stack of 'still to read' titles,
having acquired it from my trusty mail-order manga supplier**. I
also have the first Shakugan no Shana novel in the same pile...

Some people on another forum are grumbling about paying 25 dollars for

Ah, yes, the latest branch, IIRC. T have to concede, the staff
there won't have a clue who I am - you'd need to deal with the
main shop or especially the mail order operation for that to
work...

It would be an interesting conversation, though, wouldn't it? ^_^
I have to confess that I've been creeping into comics lately and
visited this shop - still known to me as "Krackers" - for the first time
in ages recently. Sadly, no longer are the Gundam kits...

[1] It wasn't the White Hart, but lets see how old umaa-ers really are
by seeing how many can tell me which anime series *did* feature a pub of
that name... ^_^

I miss that shop! OK, I only visited it twice, but it was one of those
trips I really enjoyed doing (good journey, great place, and anime too!)
But yes, I recall the terrible cost. I still have the financial scars (and
the tapes!)

There was an actual, physical, shop front? Good grief. I'd generally
assumed - before having to become familiar with obscure railway stations
- that it was an imaginary address (like Brentford, whose actual
existence was also a revelation, especially if you've ever read any
Robert Rankin... ).

Yep, the shop actually existed! It was in the High Street. Not a
particularly large place but it had a fair amount of kit including
posters, videos (including imports) and cels amongst other things.
Apparently most of the remaining stock went to the Sheffield Space Centre
after the big bust-up between Anime Projects and ADV, the shop being one
of the first things to go.

In my memoirs (to be released on a website near you sometime this year)
I point out that my first legitimate copy of "Nausicaa of the Valley of
Wind" (VHS, JLO) cost me £60. And yes, nowadays I gripe if an entire
season/series costs that much.

One particular series (El Hazard) cost me almost £1000 to watch.
In fairness, I should perhaps point out that about £800 of this was
buying the Laser Disc player, that being the only format the series was
available in at the time. Nevertheless, it's only a slight exageration
to say that El Haz cost me that much to watch, as it was the desire to
watch it that twisted my arm into nuying the LD layer.

<grin> I had a similar experience... I bought Animeigo's BGC LDs
before I owned a player (and then used their presence in the
house as the lever with my wife to buy a player).
Hmm, two experiences - I recall as I'm writing this that I bought
a bunch of DVDs in the US in February 1999, then had to buy a
player (a £400 Pioneer, 'chipped' for multi-region playback) when
I came back from the holiday. (I'd been expecting to buy LDs as I
had in November 1997, but they'd almost completely disappeared in
the intervening period...
