Lived in Warwickshire 25 years - didn't know there were two Atherstones.
I naturally assumed it was the one in North Warwickshire, and thought
the news people had it wrong when they said it was near Stratford.

Let us all remember the families of the missing firemen and hope the
police catch the bastards who did it.

Mmmmm me in a way also, but hr "nr Alcester" bit got me thinking.

I think this must be on the site of RAF Stratford (now Alscot airstrip).
The local BBC TV teatime news today with Lindsay Doyle was I feel
rather overegging it. I know this may be in rather bad taste at the
moment, but don't forget the 100+ plus serviceman, mainly Canadian and
buried in Stratford, who also gave their life 65 years ago at that
airfield for another cause.

From Google Earth:

RAF Stratford
1941 Opened as RAF Atherstone in 91 Gp Bomber Cmd
Jul 41-Nov 42 Opened as Atherstone
22 Operational Training Unit
Satellite of RAF Wellesbourne Mountford
Nov 42-Feb 44 23 Operational Training Unit
Mar 44-1945 22 Operational Training Unit
1945-1945 RAF Signals Flying Unit

I've found the appropriate layer on Google Earth and am truly astonished
by how many old airfields are around here!

Chris H,
He's predictable, but that's to be expected.
