A gloomy outlook apparently
It's certainly coming to something when that old High Street stalwart Marks
& Spencer suffer a fall in shares of more than 20% and warns of weak sales
and "stormy times ahead". I was so confident that my purchase of a 10p
plastic bag in their Epsom store only last month had secured their financial
future. I think I may now keep it as an historic relic of a lost dynasty.

Well, my house is on the market as of this week and I'm hopefully
selling my business to my manager.

Tough times indeed, I'm completely fucked off with this country. its
social and youth problems, successive
incompetent leaders and greedy corporations..

I'm gonna be an old hippie..

I sincerely wish you well on both counts Brian, particularly on the house
sale ... it's a very difficult market now with mortgages drying up, but
there are still some non-chain buyers out there.

Totally agree, this country has gone to hell in a bucket.

First of all, are you a competent adult? Have you been vetted by the
police? Do you have a licence and insurance to set up such events? Even if
the answer to these questions is 'yes', I still have reservations about any
venue that has 'Dork' in the description.

M&S have suffered the same malaise that has infected many once great
companies. Marconi, Jessops, British Airways, On-Digital, BSB. In many
cases, in their desperation to achieve growth to keep the fund managers
happy they've sacked competent middle management wholesale: men and
women with the experience to see trouble coming, and the skills to head
it off. Their sin was too climb too high up the salary ladder and that
made them vulnerable.

Any competent marketing man would have foreseen that Marconi's Zonephone
wheeze in which subscribers could make calls but not receive them was
doomed to failure. They lost billions. Whampoa lost a packet but their
Rabbit debacle was on nothing like the scale of the Zonephone financial
disaster. BSB's impending collapse was so obvious that even a nerd like
me saw it coming. Its inept CE slapped an injunction on me to stop
referring to it as 'Broke Soon Broadcasting' in my column.

Now trouble hits these companies and rolls over them before they realise
what's happening. M&S sacked many of their experienced buyers and handed
over the job to wet-between-the-legs trilling Miss Tweetie Pie dollies
with the business acumen of chewing gum splats. They damn near brought
M&S to its knees.

Congrats on your noble efforts to save M&S. I've reused Homebase's big
butch bags on several occasions so I'm doing my bit to ward off the
terrible perils of galactic warming.

Since we switched our cats over to Whiskas pouches rather than tins,
last month all our waste went into the incinerator and we managed
virtually a refuse collection free fortnight.

Now that the problem of making easy to tear open plastic pouches has
been cracked, the can's days are numbered.

I vaguely recall that in one of those witless surveys organised by
'Location3' that Epsom came out rather well as a desirable place to
live, with Godalming among the front runners.

I'm allowed a single malteser if I'm good. I wonder what the favourite
tipple was of M&S's head of food who's just fallen on his sword? Must've
been potent stuff for him not have seen trouble looming several months
ago. There's a whole range of superior foodstuffs from Lidl at half the
price of M&S's overpriced nosh.

Lidl set about racheting up their food quality and expanding their range
of so-called luxury foods about a year ago. As a result their A and B
market penetration is healthy and so is their growth. Their Goody brand
pecan nut and honey oat serial is stuff to die for and their spaghetti
carbonara ready meal ought to be an illegal substance.

I'm quite partial to Glenmorangie. They did a version that was matured in
old Madeira casks and it was sublime. I haven't bought any recently so I
don't know if it's still readily available.
