Scouts' forest chapel torn down after 70 years because it might offend non-Christians
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=459310&in_page_id=1770
For almost 70 years, Scouts and Guides have savoured their place of
peaceful worship under the trees.
But no longer. The woodland chapel has been demolished - its wooden
pews and rudimentary cross and altar removed. In its place is a
campfire circle.
The change has been imposed by the Scout Association, which believes
the chapel excludes non-Christian Scouts.
Locals are dismayed, but the association says it is simply "moving
forward".
The basic open-air structure in woodland surrounding Belchamps Scout
Centre in Hockley, Essex, was built between the wars by volunteers.
They used old telegraph poles for pews and built a basic altar and
cross. Visiting groups of Brownies, Guides,
Cubs and Scouts, have used it for generations.
Weddings have been blessed there, ashes scattered and memorial trees
planted.
But in April, as the Scouting movement celebrated its centenary, it
was torn down.
Former Scout leaders are outraged. Keith Rooks-Cowell, 66, led Sunday
services in the outdoor chapel for more than 30 years.
The retired civil servant said: "Part of the Scout promise is to do
our duty to God. It's an important tradition.
"Scouting has got no objection to any religion or faith - you should
have faith, but it's not important which one.
"Anyone from any faith or any religion could go and use the chapel,
it's never been a problem. The chapel was already inclusive.
"It has been wrecked. All the posts and everything had been demolished
and laid flat. I was amazed and felt disgusted that this had been
done."
Wendy Wilson, a bank worker and Scout leader from South-end, held
religious services in the chapel for seven years. Her son Joshua, now
nine, was baptised there.
She said: "It's a really special place. We all make a promise to do
our duty to God, whatever God that may be.
"The chapel has never been an issue. If people didn't want to attend
services, it didn't matter and they could choose to have their own
ceremonies there. Nobody was made to feel excluded."
However, centre manager Nigel Ruse, 42, said: "The updating of the
chapel was done to turn it into a place of worship for all faiths and
not to exclude any one from Scouting.
"This is a case of taking Scouting-forward."
He said religious ceremonies could be held at the campfire circle.
But Mr Rooks-Cowell said: "A campfire is a place for sitting round
singing, telling jokes and stories. The chapel was used as a quiet
place for any leaders to go and sit and think. The two don't sit
comfortably together.
"The campfire is not the right place for worship. All religions
involves meditation and relaxation."
Last year, it was revealed that the Scout Association banned helpers
from putting suncream on children unless they already had sunburn.
This was to done to prevent allegations of child abuse.

Daily mail the rag for the terminally outraged.
I love Belchamps, I like Nigel but this is ridiculous.
I am not Christian, I found the chapel very welcoming and peaceful, but then
there were politics at play last time I visited and I dare say there are
now.

Neither am I religious, but find the whole idea ridiculous (or religidicoulous)
that such ancient structures should offend anyone. Some people are just nuts.
As simple as that.

I would read Andrew Thorpe's Comment (Quoted below), i believe he is
something to do with HQ? Media officer?

I would like to take this opportunity to add some information that has not
been included in this piece. The Scout Movement has always been multi faith
since it was born 100 years ago. Indeed I can confirm that the old chapel
had been used for multi faith services sometime. The chapel has simply been
moved to an area that is more fit for purpose and all of the materials used
in the old facility have been reused in the new one.
Scouting offers fun, challenge and adventure to people of all faiths and
backgrounds. I can also confirm that there has been no change imposed by The
Scout Association.

It is typical of many of the stories that appear in the press it is
loosely based on fact but doesn't let the fact interfere with the story
so that it becomes sensationalised to the point of fiction. I suppose
reporting the facts just wouldn't be so sensational and wouldn't give
headlines that sell.

True or not I smell a Troll.
I've noticed over the years that when somone with fundamentalist or
racist views wants to foment discussion that they KNOW will draw
people to their thinking, they cross post items such as this.
My apologies to "Steve Green" if I am wrong, but as far as I can see
it is a first time post, it is as far as I can see a reprint of an
article in a paper, and it carries no comment, no further input from
the OP.
The post smells as rotten as the subject itself.

Quite true. What is the point of crossposting large cut n' paste which we

No but there were a couple of threads on it last year following an article
in the Daily Mail.
Read all about it here:

True or not I smell a Troll.
I've noticed over the years that when somone with fundamentalist or
racist views wants to foment discussion that they KNOW will draw
people to their thinking, they cross post items such as this.
My apologies to "Steve Green" if I am wrong, but as far as I can see
it is a first time post, it is as far as I can see a reprint of an
article in a paper, and it carries no comment, no further input from
the OP.
The post smells as rotten as the subject itself.

Quite true. What is the point of crossposting large cut n' paste which we
can read anyway on major sites? It is political spamming and abuse of usenet.

Ahh there we go, the Daily Mail, need I say more.
Staunchly defending their right to misinterpret the facts in the name of a
good story that is guaranteed to get self righteous middle England
harrumphing in their cardigans...
The best use for the daily mail is lining a Rabbit hutch

It is a well-known fact. The rate of paedophilia among the general male
population is 110%. Among scoutmasters it is at least 173%. This has
been scientifically proved in at least 31 NSPCC papers that no-one has
ever seriously disputed.

Moreover, anybody who denies it is clearly himself a paedophile. And
since it is well known from NSPCC studies that paedophiles are habitual
liars, we don't need to listen to what they say.

No, Christains and Patriots are not "fascists". They are people who love
their God, their country or both. They are certainly not traitorous,

There is nothing to stop a fascist being a patriot, or a patriot being a
