Pier Head maple trees?
I went down to the Pier Head, on Saturday, for the first time in
years. I didn't know that it had all been dug up while the Leeds
Liverpool canal is extended.
Have all of the maple trees been chopped down? They were supposed to
be a memorial to all of the Royal Canadian Navy ships and men which
were lost in WWII and it seems a shame to have hacked them down -
although I couldn't be sure if the tree stumps which I saw were the
maples.
Does anyone know if they are to be replaced?

Hi Judith,
from a quick googling - it seems that once the canal construction, etc
is complete, the 40 canadian maples will be replaced by 90 norwegian
maples (I don't know why they are norwegian, when, as you say it was
created as a canadian war memorial?)
cheers

no, apparently it's the beginnings of a more major project to create a
norwegian wood (the related strawberry fields idea was rejected).
& no problem, Judith - I enjoy the challenge of a google with purpose
- if it helps any, I think I prob googled -
"pier head" canal maples
- the inverted commas means google only looks for sites with the 2
words pier & head next to one another,
I found a bit more info/comment here -
http://www.merseyshipping.co.uk/features/pierhead100307/pierhead100307.htm
(though the site as a whole is a bit gloom & doom for me)
"The view from Mann Island along Canada Boulevard. Canadian maple
trees planted in the 1990s as part of a WWII memorial to Canadian
seamen were felled without warning at the beginning of March. The
council claimed in the local press that the Canadian maples had not
thrived and will be replaced by Norwegian maples! Strange they didn't
look that bad and now the place looks exceedingly bare without them."

Hi Judith,
from a quick googling - it seems that once the canal construction, etc
is complete, the 40 canadian maples will be replaced by 90 norwegian
maples (I don't know why they are norwegian, when, as you say it was
created as a canadian war memorial?)
cheers

no, apparently it's the beginnings of a more major project to create a
norwegian wood (the related strawberry fields idea was rejected).
Strange they didn't
look that bad and now the place looks exceedingly bare without them."

no, apparently it's the beginnings of a more major project to create a
norwegian wood (the related strawberry fields idea was rejected).
The

look that bad and now the place looks exceedingly bare without them."
