new pc
I have just got a new pc with Vista from Dell and i am really disappointed,
it took me 35 minutes to set up and my eyes did not bleed or my ears catch
fire :(

Gone are the days that a new pc was a whole weeks adventure

That's a coincidence, I got a new Dell with Vista last week. I set aside 2
days to set it up, switched it on, plugged in my broadband and that was it!
Absolutely marvellous! Did have a bit of a problem with McAfee, couldn't
register it, but after getting very uptight rang their service line and they
said their server was buggered that day and try again tomorrow. Bingo!

I've been using Vista on my new laptop for about 4 mths and I can't see what
all the "anti-Vista" fuss was about. After about a month, I decided to buy
the same laptop for my eldest and she loves it.

It is different in detail to XP but then XP was different to 98 etc.

McAfee sucks.

Try AVG Free antivirus http://free.avg.com/ww.homepage-appf8

Doesn't cost a penny and it updates definitions daily.

I've always used Panda previously. Some people moan about it, it is not all
that user friendly but it does stop everything. Norton is crap and I'm using
McAfee as it came pre-installed with the Dell. In what way does it suck?
Does it let crap through? If so I'll reinstall my Panda subscription to my
new pc.

I'm sure that they're efficient in stopping viruses (or would that be viri)
but unless they've stopped the practice - don't they give you a time limited
subscription? If they're anything like Norton they require a credit card
and then automatically bill whenever the time period is up.

I recently bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista - but opted to remove the
subscription type programs and went with the free versions of AVG and
Adaware for protection.

Apart from AVG I think they all give time limited subscriptions. I use
Paretologic for Spyware, Adware etc as added protection. Not sure if it's
necessary but then I've always been one for double protection. Since I was
16! :-)

Got the newest Norton Antivirus thingy free with mine and it seems to have
done the trick so far. Tried McAfee and kept getting my pc freezing, may
not have been anything to do with it but wont go back nonetheless.

I think you'll find that Norton is a time limited subscription. After a
certain time - it will tell you that if you want the virus definition
updates you'll have to pay.

I've been using AVG Free antivirus for a couple of years now with no
problems.

Sorry. I've put them all in on commercial sites. Free is fine but if it
doesn't do what its supposed to do you could be paying a much higher cost.

I'd have responded earlier - but I picked up a virus.

No - not really. I downloaded the XP service pack 3 and it totally
destroyed my internet connection.
It took me about 2 hours to get it up and running again.
