Mugabe
I'll shoot him if someone pays my airfare and gives me a gun. Seems like the
only way.

Surely this crisis is what the UN was created for? They should send in
troops to oust him immediately. Almost all governments would back that
motion.

He should be declared mentally ill - and I'm serious on that - he's mentally
ill with addiction to power. He is utterly unstoppable any other way apart
from a magic bullet. I just can't see why no-one has done this yet. There
are no real supporters to worry about, so what's the delay for? We could
send in the SAS to do the job properly.

If the politicians need another excuse, like they did with invading Iraq,
then that excuse should be to help solve some of the rising world food
prices (former bread-basket of Africa) in the medium-term.

Come on someone! Shoot him!

The UN is a toothless tiger who rarely (if ever) seems to be part of the
solution but is usually part of the problem. With China having a seat on
the UN Security Council (giving it a veto on over any UN action) and close
links with Mugabe (not to mention a general interest in keeping bits of the
world "unstable"), how likely do you think any UN action is?

Sadly, I'm afraid we (the UK) played a part in handing power to Mugabe- look
up the Lancaster House Agreement (LHA).

The LHA was brokered by the UK and pushed aside the moderate biracial
government of Zimbabwe and replaced it with the current shower of despots.
Since then (1979 or so), Zimbabwe has been spiralling down to the current
situation.

Fat chance! Abyssinia appealed to the League of Nations when the Italians
were gassing them and it sat on its hands. The UN did the same over
Ruanda. Why you think that an organisation of governments should be more
effective or morally motivated than the individual governments that make
it up is something to wonder.

Is he any worse than Thabu Mbeki who refuses to believe that HIV is the
precusor to Aids and has thus consigned tens of thousands of his fellow
countrymen to a lingering death? Is he any worse than the multitude of
basket cases ruling most of Africa? He just cares less about covering it
up.

I agree that Mugabe is a blood-thirsty tyrant and the sooner Zimbabwe is
rid of him the better for all concerned. I am a bit suspicious though of
the moral outrage shown by our Great Leader about him. Mugabe is a most
convenient outrage enabling him to take the lead and show his "qualities".
I would be more inclined to trust in his sincerity if last week, instead
of bowing and scraping to the Saudi Royal Family to beg them to produce
more oil, he had shown them an equal amount of moral outrage for the way
they torture their political opponents, stone adulterers and all the other
barbarisms of Sharia law, and deny women any rights at all, except the
right to be genitally mutilated.

Tub-thumping about Mugabe and his cronies would look less like political
opportunism if Brown applied similar moral outrage to all African or
Middle Eastern despots, and China's treatment of the Tibetans. Fat chance!

And wonder indeed I do. I was merely questioning the very existence of the
UN at all - presumerably when the LON was made up, it had joint resolution
of conflicts, political, military and economic in mind? If this isn't a
prime example of when that organisation and its members should step in, then
I don't know what is. But ultimately, we all know its long been an
undermined and impotent body, hence my original assertion that Mugabe needs
to be shot.

You have a good point there, but that shouldn't prevent any action on ending
this sorry story. There are fine lines between appalling political
decisions and a reign of outright terror. The world's leaders should be
stopping them, not "working together" to stop them, that's just bullshit
political buzzwords for hand-wringing which mean they aren't really going to
do anything effective at all.

The world is in a complete and utter fecking mess on so many levels and its
disgraceful that individual's have to rely on their crappy politicians to
sort the mess out (which in reality means they help to mess it up further).
But surely it only takes one individual to end this particular mess and
he/she needs a gun to do it. He'll go on for years otherwise. What is he?
80-something isn't he? He looks well. Can't see him snuffing it naturally
any time soon...so what other realistic options apart from assassination are
there? Petitions? Negotiations? Restrictions? Sanctions? Please...

I can't help but feel that if he was a muslim, or if he had oil, the western
world would be in there like a shot.

If I recall correctly Zimbabwe has half the worlds known reserves of
chromium plus some rare metals essential to modern technology. We don't
seem to keen to get our hands on them.

Perhaps you had forgotten the chemical aspects where Saddam gassed many
thousands of his own citizens...Be that as it may there is evidence that he
also had a nuclear program as all but a few acknowledged including most
european countries and some middleastern ones.
