A GROUP of Island residents became British citizens at a ceremony at 
Northwood House, Cowes.
Among them were Diana Beckley, 26, of St John’s Court, Sandown, plus 
Betty Idicula, 43, and her children, Aneeta, 18, and Alan, 11, of Albany 
Road, Newport, pledged allegiance to the Queen and loyalty to the United 
Kingdom by promising to uphold its values and laws.
The Isle of Wight Council chairman, Cllr Arthur Taylor, presented them 
all with certificates of naturalisation before they signed up to the IW 
Register of Citizenship.
Housewife Diana came to the Island from Russia six years ago and met her 
husband, David, a crop worker. The couple married 18 months ago.
Betty and her family came to the Island five years ago from India. She 
is a staff nurse at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, where her husband, 
John, 47, works as a clerical assistant.
Jean Elwin, the IW Council’s superintendent registrar, said: “These 
ceremonies are very important in welcoming new British citizens into the 
Island community. It is a significant day for them, so we try to ensure 
the ceremony marks this in an appropriate way.”

I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on achieving 
this and welcome them to OUR country

They sound like decent, useful citizens.
What a pity we can't de-select from citizenship some of the UK-borne scum 
who think they own the country but cause nothing but trouble.
