Island Auctionsite
Hi everyone, i am new to this newsgroup as i have only recently moved
back to the island, i was just wondereing what everyone thought of the
new auctionsite for the island? I received a leaflet advertising it
and understand it is quite new? I notice there is also a freeads
section which i have bought from and thought it was a refreshing
change to the usual freeads where half of the ads have expired or are
duplicated or have sold and not been removed or am i the only one who
has this problem?!!
For those of you who have no idea what i am talking about, the site is
www.wightauction.co.uk or www.iowfreeads.com
I believe these sites are linked to www.wightbusiness.com also? It is
a business directory for the island, are there any other directorys
like this or is it a new thing?
Does anyone know much about any of these sites or how popular they are
etc?
Are they any good to sell on as the fees for the auction site looked
cheap to me, it would save me a lot of money to list on there instead
of "other" auction sites!!
I have loads of stuff i need to get rid of that i found when i moved
and wanted peoples opinion of the site first

Many thanks in advance

I was genuinely asking people for help and advice , didnt realise i
would get this sort of response, i have just moved to the island with
my kids and just wanted to know where i could sell some of my unwanted
items for a bit of extra cash, thought the auction site looked good
cos it is for the island so postage on items wouldnt be too expensive
and there is a link on the page to the freeads, i want something local
so i can buy and sell without having to travel or pay too much p&p
Is there anyone out there that could actually help me and give me some
pointers? As someone who is new to the island i am not aware of local
services.

Kind Regards

what do you mean by it has got it right at last? were there problems
with it? i looked at the listing fees on the auction site and thought
it was cheap but didnt know whether it was worth paying to list on it
or whether to just use the freeads which would cost me nothing? I
understand it is a fairly new site which i suppose would explain why
there are only 260ish members, i didnt know how much it got used by
locals as i was initially told about a different site which is for
classifieds but i didnt get on with it too well, a large percentage of
ads i clicked on were expired or sold and i got frustrated scrolling
through them all trying to look for stuff, then i found the iowfreeads
but again there is only about 45 ads on there, i know these sites are
new but do items actually get sold on there?

Wightbay is still there, that is a classifieds site, that is the site
i tried and didnt get on with because of duplicates and expired ads
and dodgy replies to ads etc.
WightAuction is an auctionsite and is supposedly a new site that has
recently started which has its own freeads section, i received a
leaflet through my door advertising it so i checked it out but as i
said because it is so new there arent that meny members, about 260 i
think, i just wanted to know if anyone had bought or sold on it and is
it worth me paying to list on it? I used to use ebay quite a lot
before i moved here but now i live on the island i find that everyone
charges a fortune to deliver to here?? I do like my auctions, that is
why i wanted to try wightauction but although it is loads cheaper than
ebay obviously i only want to pay to list if i have a good chance of
selling!

Pwheh... your post did look like spam...
Looked at the site... seems ok. I'm heartened by the fact that the
sellers have all entered their postcode [..condition of sale?] which
you can google (earth) so reduces some elements of problems,
especially living on the Island. You can go collect!
Not much for sale but then it takes a while for something like this to
get exposure and people on board. Needs CP and IOW Radio coverage at
least [..maybe it already has had , I'm not sure] then hope for the
best.
It's catch twenty two at the moment, isn't it... putting stuff up for
sale when there isn't a mass of people visiting seems fruitless but
unless and until people do then it's not going to work..!
Where's our resident expert? I cannot believe he's not
watching...after the things he's been through out here in usenut land
he cannot be so thin skinned [..well, he isn't] as to overeact to
postings in the way he has by 'leaving'
Tell us a bit about yourself.... why did you come here etc., where
from and if you're doing anything of interest..... if you want, that
is!!

I've bought a washing machine and a fridge from Wightauctions. Very
handy to get a fridge in an emergency when one of mine broke down on the

i moved here about 9 months ago with my kids so they could be brought
up here, i was brought up here and loved it!! i moved up north to
yorkshire in 1995 and have been trying to get back here ever since!!
it has taken me 12 years to get here even though i was on the housing
list for over 5 years i still had to rent privately to get down here!!
All my kids are young (6,4,3,1 and 9 days!!) my kids never got to see
their grandparents very often as with them living here and us living
in york it was too far to travel so now at least they get to spend
time together (and give me a break!!) I am very busy looking after my
kids so i dont really so anything of interest that isnt centered
around my kids!
As for your post, I agree with what you are saying about wightauction,
if people dont list then people wont go to the site, i think i might
try and list a few things and see what happens, you can autorelist
once for free i believe and the fees are low so it is worth a try!!
I havent heard it advertised in iow radio or seen it in the county
press so i dont know how many people actually know about the site, has
anyone else received leaflets through their door like me? I will let
you know how i get on with selling on wightauction!!
I actually looked them up on alexa and found out they have only
started in the middle of october so it is definately a new site and
when compared to another island based site they dont seem to be doing
too bad, worth a risk i think!! We shall see!

Yes, there is a lot of it to read. All of it unpleasant and uncomplimentary.

And now he has broken his promise to unsubscribe from this newsgroup.
But then honesty is un unknown quantity to him.

Mr Quight, do I still get my pint?

Mike,
I'm paying attention and I'm at a loss to see what you are talking
about...
I think richard put it correctly when he explained it was YOU that
mentioned YOUR medals..... no one else.
Your puffy self again bursting to get out..?
Please explain to jane, our newest member here, all about your
medals that you so desperately wanted us to guess about...
[perhaps you might like to also explain some of the other
misunderstandings over the years.... your business, your education,
your postage 'scam', your service record......... then your 'bridge'
affectation, your right wing policies and your general unempathetic
approach to social matters......vis The Big Issue]
