Perhaps a visit to the archives in Museum Rd , Southsea may give a lead.
If nothing found then you can always put some sort of a website together and
go from there.
My idiosyncratic collection of local trivia relating to Southampton.

I always wanted to know what the aircraft hanger looking building was
originally, that is now the university (St Pauls ?) sports hall, but was the
student union of the poly in the 1970s with from all UK student union's
longest bar apparently.

Why such a large cavernous space, before the poly or whoever, put in
mezzanine flooring.?
A bit of rope-climbing practise does not require that amount of open space
and I'm sure TA did not spend their time playing basketball or 5 aside.

Fairly typical for that sort of building of that age. If you recall there is
/was a roller shutter door in one wall for vehicle access.

Another Pompey mystery ?
Running south from Southsea shore, across Horse and Dean sands is a submarine
barrier marked on maritime charts, probably submarine electricity supply to
IOW. On a small boat you can safely cross this barrier but if you looked
into the water there was an elctric violet glow a bit like one of those
plasma globes, leaking electricity or just some effect of light on some type
of seaweed covering it?

Isn't it what it says it is - a barrier against submarines?
These people

seem to think so.

Perfectly correct, made up of large concrete blocks. Crossing it even in a
small boat is dangerous, at low tide the blocks can be uncovered even about
a mile offshore.
