Britons Fleeing Labours New Britain at Rate of 684 per day
Britons Fleeing Labours New Britain at Rate of 684 per day
The News of the World newspaper today carries a story that Britons are
leaving the country in record numbers, specifically blaming spiralling
levels of immigration, crime and tax. According to that newspaper,
Government figures set to be released later this year will show that
an astonishing 250,000 people fled Britain in 2007. Thats 684 a day,
or one every two minutes.
This is a 21% increase on the 207,000 who went in 2006-and up nearly
70% from the 149,000 who left in 1997. Now experts expect this years
total to be even higher as hard-pressed families seek a new life in
the sun-with Australia, New Zealand, France and Spain the top
destinations.
Meanwhile, huge numbers of foreigners are pouring into the UK, with
591,000 settling here in 2006. There has been a 90% increase in
immigration over the past ten years-from 327,000 in 1997 to an
estimated 620,000 last year. Emigration expert Paul Arthur believes
the numbers leaving will continue to rise. He said: We have had
record enquiries about emigration over this winter, with people not
just wanting to escape the bleak weather, but seeking a whole change
of lifestyle.
Many are unhappy with the levels of crime, high taxes and the general
way of life. Overseas there are more career opportunities,
particularly in Australia and New Zealand which have huge shortfalls
in skilled labour.
According to the News of the World, typical of those leaving are
plasterer Damian Barrett and wife Alison. (pictured). The couple, both
37, who are emigrating from Bolton-le-Sands, Lancs, with kids Holly,
eight, and Joseph, six, to Auckland, New Zealand.
Alison said: Were tired of Britain, with its unfair tax system,
crime, and live-to-work ethic. There are also too many foreigners
coming in and using up all our resources. We want a better life.

OT. Providers
Had quite a lot of email conversations with friends last night over ISP's.
It would appear that I am not getting the best of deals with British Telecom
for Telephone and Broadband connections
It seems Virgin, TalkTalk and Tiscalli are better.
Any comments anyone?
Anyone done a survey? Would I be better to change my ISP?

Mike.
I have been with Virgin for many years now an never had a problem, apart
from once when I bought a new computer and was having trouble installing
Virgin, I rang their help line and they were great, talked me through it in
no time, they also talked me through another problem that nothing to do with
the network, so I am more than happy with Virgin.

I've heard some complete horror stories about TalkTalk and Tiscali, with
Tiscali being the worst of the three (no/failed news server and extreme
bandwidth throttling means half the services don't work between 4pm and
about midnight).
> Anyone done a survey? Would I be better to change my ISP?
I work for a Hampshire based ISP, so I'm biased - We're not the cheapest
but we do offer value for money as we provide as standard what many ISPs
charge extra for, and we do provide some of the best technical support
around, and also extend it to users of /all/ computers and not just the
latest version of Windows.

I went with EFH and they were excellent (never had any contention issues,
never had my connection drop off, freephone customer service number,
excellent customer support) until they were taken over by 186.com, then
they went really pear shaped.
Now with zen, not the cheapest, but again excellent service.

I've been with Madasafish for about 3 years. Very helpful getting me
connected.
The only possible downside is that they've recently been taken over by
BT.

The following comes from being a member of a conferencing system
frequented by IT professionals that have to deal with comms problems on a
daily basis, not from personal experience.
Virgin has had a very good reputation but was recently bought by NTL,
which has a dreadful reputation. If past experience of good companies
being bought by bad companies is anything to go by, Virgin will sink to
the same level as NTL rather than NTL being lifted to Virgin's level.
It's always possible that porkers might find a way to get airborne, of
course. NTL /might/ have bought Virgin as a way of upping its game but
the jury's still out.
Comments about Talk Talk include phrases such as 'Don't go there', 'Don't
walk - RUN', 'They are almost impossible to deal with and there appear to
be no internal channels of communication', 'It is fair to say that Orange
broadband is worse. But apart from that...' and, after one person comment
the he was happy with his TT service: 'Those of us who are commenting
negatively on TT [are] commenting on substantive and extremely well
documented issues of performance and competence, some of which have been
taken up by OfCOM'.
Comments about Tiscali include: '...when there are problems it's very
hard to get to talk to anyone human/without a script in front of them',
'There are far better BB suppliers than Tiscali', '...anything with
Tiscali written on it makes me nervous - I have seen how they have
treated a couple of acquaintances with Tiscali broadband, and I am not
impressed'.
The general consensus seems to be that none of the companies which
provide broadband and voice telecomms give the best all-round service.
Zen is reckoned to be the best of the low-cost ADSL providers and I can
personally recommend First Telecom as a landline provider.
It has to be said that you get what you pay for and that, generally
speaking, the rock-bottom-price companies are not going to be superbly
equipped with technical knowledge, good support personnel or a
willingness to spend appropriate amounts of time on any problems that
might arise.
Broadband providers I can vouch for include Merula
(http://www.merula.net/), ICUK (http://www.icukhosting.co.uk/) and
Wizards (http://www.wizards.co.uk/). None of them are cheap.

Thanks for that Jon.
Have to agree that when a company is taken over it goes down to the lowest
level rather than up to the highest level. Can quote Rolls Royce and Cunard.
Both gone down since take over.

You've done what everyone else has - unthrottle the pipe, but count the
bytes. I'm on the back end of some aluminium 'phone wire, so I can only
get (just over) 2 megs - but I'm on an unlimited package, so I can pull
down TV shows from iPLayer etc. without worrying. Or remote desktop
into my machine at work when I'm at home, without worrying. I've hit 40
gigs a few times - but slowly. At 8Mb that's what? 1mB a second, 1000
seconds, use your month's allocation in half a day - and then what?
My obsolete, capless-but-slow tariff from Pipex works for me.

It's because unfortunately, BT wholesale are forcing all ISPs to do that.
:-(

I completely agree. We used to offer 512KB, 1MB and 2MB fixed rate tariffs
which were (completely) unlimited - until about a year ago when BT started
to stop letting ISPs do this.
Luckily I struck a deal whereby all our existing customers could keep their
existing tariff if they wanted to, which means we've got quite a few
customers on only a 512Kb - 2MB line but with a completely uncapped service.
Unfortunately, all *new* connections have to be on the DSL 'max' system
which means they're up to 8MB but limited to a 'fair usage' policy. All
ISPs are now having to do this - unless they have their own cable
infrastructure (like cable companies).
Mind you, at least we're honest enough to explain things to people - far
too many ISPs claim unlimited usage only to have a 'fair use' policy
mentioned somewhere deep down in the small print. This can vary from a few
MBs (O2) to up to 100GB (us) depending upon what tariff you choose.
It can all be a bit of a mine-field to a newcomer or non-techie! :-(

It doesn't quite work like that (for a start you're unlikely to get a
sustained 8Mb download rate on an ordinary BT line, plus you'd have to be
downloading serious amounts of data to use that kind of allocation.
I've recently been downloading entire Linux and Solaris DVDs and I've
hardly used up even our minimum quota, as it's based more on a 95%
percentile of bandwidth rather than literal "bytes downloaded" but still, I
know what you mean. :-)
