I recall seeing a TV program once on how stars wouldn't exist unless we were

If he were alone, he would be right, but if he were right, he can only 
be a woman, in which case a man can only exist when there is a woman to 
observe (& tell him he is wrong.  Therefore the situation you presented 
can never happen.
