Gran Turismo Mobile now officially cancelled?
IGN reports that GT4 for the PSP has been cancelled officially..

Damn that sucks! I was really looking forward to it, and quite frankly
the footage Sony showed prior to the launch of the PSP was one of the
reasons I bought the PSP in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I never regretted buying a PSP and I still use it
more than my PS2 and my Wii, but I think Sony are scum for advertising
it and then killing it quietly.

Would it have been Sony? I'd have thought the developers. Can't imagine
Sony deliberately throwing away a potential goldmine.

Well, they've pretty much thrown away the PS3, so it's possible.

Polyphony Digital are a Sony company, if I remember correctly?

It's pretty disgaceful of Sony really; when they launched the PSP, they
sold the public on it by putting it on display playing a UMD video of
the PS2 version of GT4, and made enough talk about GT4 mobile to make
people assume that they were looking at GT4 Mobile. Every newspaper,
magazine and website that covered the announcement of the PSP ran a
picture of it with GT4 "running" on the screen, and I'm sure that lots
of people bought a PSP on the basis that GT4 was on the way.

Sony really are shits, and I've completely lost all trust I had in the company.

Yep, I'm angry too, since one of the reasons I bought the PSP was GTM.

Suppose we may only find out who cancelled it at a later point.

Having played GT2 on the PSP, unless they added damage I can't see it really
being much different. You may as well get CFW and rip your own copy of GT
like I did.

Plus, with only having one analogue controller it was always going to play a
bit strange anyway (that said TDU was brill)

Don't bother, just deKay with his usual trolling Sony comments, he's a
stuck record unless there is some form of wand in his gaming, just
don't ask where the wand normally is.

Exactly; being a racing-games fan I have had my kicks on the PSP (with
a.o. NfS:Most Wanted, WipeOut and Race Driver 2), but the promise of
GT4M being release 'soon' was the thing that drove me to buying one at
launch-day.

How typical of Sony.

Sure - and they deserve to fail as well. Their marketing and region specific
pricing policies have been offensive. That's ignoring the laughable and
lying hype about hardware specs and in game performance. (The revelation
that GT Mobile is vapourware surely doesn't surprise anyone?)

But the deal with Warner has probably not only saved Blu-Ray but also
secured the long term future of the PS3. The law suits will come thick and
fast (no doubt) but when the DVD Forum, including Toshiba itself and M$, has
basically admitted defeat you know something big has happened. I wouldn't be
surprised if Sony's alleged financial deal with Warner included a payment
for the predicted breach of contract costs when the eventual law suit is
settled.

The failure of Betamax would have resulted in the end of most companies but
with an unlimited bank balance (albeit one funded through limitless loans)
Sony knows through experience, unfortunately perhaps too well, how to win a
battle for survival in a market place dominated by multi national
corporations and cartel contracts.

Sony's biggest worldwide marketing problem, I think, in the last 8 years or
so was its failure to maximise the potential of the PS Network - in
comparison to the slick operation that was/is XBox Live Sony just didn't
seem to care about the service (despite at one time, and possibly still for
all I know, having more users than XBox Live).

M$ by contrast has given the European market good products Xbox 360 and Xbox
Live) at a fair price point in terms of consistency of pricing and release
dates across territories. Sony has given the European market good products
(PS2 and PS3) at unfair price points, with crappy release dates and a
failure to treat the European market with even basic respect.

Hopefully the increased attractive of the PS3 in the coming year (as a
Blu-Ray player) will result in a reduction in the UK cost of the PS3. I'm
not holding my breath though.

Gareth.

Weekly, are you sure? That would be headline news surely.

Over what time frame, let's say a couple of years, that's 104 marketing
blunders.

Nope, haven't heard of that many.

Don't know anything about specs but yes their Euro pricing is too high
compared to other regions, but MS also priced the 360 higher here than in
other territores - well actually everybody does more or less.

Don't disagree, Live has had problems of late but yes a much better service.
For me I'm not going to pay for online so PSN as crappy as it can be suits
me, but for 99.9% of everyone else if you want to play online the 360 is the
way to go.

As above I basically agree, the PS3 has been more expensive here than in
other territories (particularly Japan where we buy all our elelctonics gear)
compared to the 360, but it seems now MS are playing catchup to the PS3 in
terms of releasing machines first with HDMI, larger HDD and now the rumoured
HD drive, all features the PS3 has in one box.
If you compare the two here now there isn't a great deal of price in it, but
yes Sony should have released their product at a much lower price point to
compete with the 360 and it's already large catalogue of games.

Because the Dual Shock has two. Try getting gold medals in GT with a digital
pad, much more difficult than with analogue.

None of these features are of any use whatsoever for playing games though.

Given the size of the install some PS3 games insist on doing (looks at
4GB EG5 file), I'd say a larger HDD was essential for gaming on PS3 :)

True - in the most part though a HD drive would allow more content unless
you want to disc swap.

We got our PS3 as more of an entertainment device than just a games console.
That doesn't fit everyone of course but I also think it's fair to say that
both companies also see their machines as more than just a gaming console.
