Labor Day Play, Want, Bin
PLAY
N+ (DS) - This was my game to play while my wife got stuck into the new
Harvest Moon. Not as a hard as the PC/360 versions, thankfully, but I've had
several hundred (possibly over a thousand) tries of level 29-0 and haven't
managed to complete it. This ate my weekend.
Castle Crashers (360) - Good fun. I've got to a wedding level, but died.
The Last Guy Demo (PS3) - Really enjoyed this zombified mix of Google Earth,
Pac-Man and Snake. May well buy the full version.
WANT
The Last Guy (PS3) - Like I said.
Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise (360) - This week! Yay!
Spore (PC) - This week! Boo!
BIN
N+ (DS) - Except I can't. I should do, I almost want to, but after over five
hours of trying, I NEED to complete level 29-0 before I give up on it.

Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
Did the first 5 hours or so yesterday (just did the Harrier, did the
tanker intro bit). I remember from the last time I played this that
every five minutes they refer to Shadow Moses, which I assumed last time
was the first game. Having now just played the first game, I'm still
making the same assumption, since it's never confirmed and at no point
in the first game is the phrase "Shadow Moses" used. Also has WAY more
dialogue than I recall. I reckon watching/playing time is on a 70/30
split so far. Also why do they have to introduce a really good
character, have him as the main character for half an hour and then blow
him up? But ACE nonetheless.
Guitar Hero Aerosmith (360)
I am EXPERT WINNER. But I don't like Guitar Hero, or Aerosmith. Still,
done now.
Batman Marathon (DVD)
Watching all of them. The old ones really are shit.

Lots:
Beautiful Katamari (360)
Me am cry. If I play the final level on Eternal mode, and collect absolutely
everything (including The King), I can only get my Katamari up to 1,450,000km.
Meaning 1,500,000 is, in fact, impossible - black hole or no black hole. With
this revelation, I set about redoing levels again, making more and more
planets so that I'll have some more to collect next time I try. Assuming the
black hole doesn't eat me.
Galaga Legions (360)
I'm getting worse at this. I can barely make it as far as Level 3 now, let
alone complete it. And I still can't complete Area 1 or 2 without losing a
life. In more positive news, I'm still at the top of my leaderboard, but that
probably just reinforces how difficult the game is.
Geometry Wars Evolved 2 (360)
Thankfully, nobody on my "to beat" list (that's parm, SomethingWitty, That Rev
Chap, Lufferov and Zomoniac) has managed to overtake me on any of the
scoreboards. I had a go at improving my standings on the Sequence and Pacifism
tables, but didn't.
Ticket to Ride (360)
Four games against my wife, two won each.
Mr Driller Online (360)
Attempted Russia (3000m). Managed to reach 1800m. Rubbish.
Tiger Woods '09 Demo (360)
Golf: Tee it Up has better camera controls, and the speech and between-hole
golfer animations just get in the way. PGA Tour hasn't been the same since it
left the Amiga, and I won't be buying this when other, better, golf games
exist.
Final Fantasy Tictacs: Simba's Pride (PSP)
Won four battles. I wish I'd stop forgetting I have a PSP, as the two games I
play on it have month long gaps between sessions. It doesn't help that every
time I have to play, I need to charge it. And before I've finished playing, I
need to charge it again.
Mahjongg Wii (Wii)
It's not Mahjongg, it's Shanghai. But it plays well even though I didn't
manage to finish any of the five attempts I had.
Scogger (Wii)
Bloody hard. Took aaaaaaages to figure out one of the puzzles. But then
managed to. Then there were more puzzles but my brane was broke, so I stopped
playing.

being the first free weekend I've had since moving to Cambridge, Mrs W was

rides and having people round for a barbecue and things. So I played a couple
of Tiger Challenges and the front 9 on Sheshan, and did a few of those training
things. I like very much the instant GamerNet challenges. I even beat one of
them, which is nice. I don't like that EA's servers still seem to be connected
via strings and tin cans. Friend leaderboards still broken on launch weekend?
Bah.
Geometry Wars 2 (360) - I seem to top out at just shy of 9 million on Pacifism.
Three or four times I got to about 8.8 million and died. I think maybe that's
because that's the point I have to blink at and then I lose track or something.
Anyway, it's still awesome and maybe Pacifism is actually the best mode, too.

The broken-ness of the Gamernet servers is really beginning to grate now - I
do hope that there will be some kind of remedial action from EA, rather than
just waiting until the load drops naturally as we move away from launch.
Despite this - still excellent. When the servers were working, I busted a
load of challenges. I like the way that the 9 hole challenges offer you the
opportunity to stop early if you've met all the win criteria before the end.
I've done a bit more of the Tiger Challenge, and played quite a few offline
stroke play rounds just to see the courses in full. Managed to get a HIO on
a par 4 as part of a gamernet challenge, but this didn't unlock the HIO
achievement or count towards my stats as an albatross.
I think I'll struggle to max out my stats completely with the new skills
mechanism. You need to maintain lusidcrously high levels of accuracy and
length throughout every game you play, otherwise stats begin to suffer. I'm
reasonably well developed now, with all 4 stats in the 8-10 range (before
equipment modifiers), and all fluctuating from round to round. This
levelling out of the character progression does at least mean that I can
start doing the PGA tour alongside the Tiger Challenge, rather than waiting
for my stats to be maxed as I've done in previous years.
The achievements I unlocked in this yesterday also took me past the
finishing post in...
The Beating Zo to 50k Game (360)
Hurrah. Not that I feel a little ashamed for the role that Surf's Up had in
that, or anything. ;)
Speaking of which...
Surf's Up (360)
It's actually not a bad little game. I recall Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer not
being as good as this is as an actual surfing game, but that isn't the most
glowing of recommendations, I suppose. It has to be said, though, that it is
a game aimed at kids in every possible way. The difficulty level is
ridiculously low throughout, which is a bit of a shame, because with the
same game mechanics but higher score thresholds for completing events it
could actually have had a bit more longevity for the adult player and been a
genuinely enjoyable game.

Can't argue with that. I have played some stinkers over the years!

My best game is apparently ICC Cricket 2007 (AKA Brian Lara). I can only
assume that this rates so highly because relatively few people bought it,
rather than it being hard.
Shamefully my 'best' single achievement is the '30 years of franchise' one
in Madden 06, which I got whilst watching the footy (in picture in picture
mode) on telly earlier in the year - just to stay ahead of Zo!

Half Life 2 (360) - Finished the main game, so played through the

that escort section near the end. The main problem, especially coming
straight from HL2, is that it's set in the same areas you've just
played through. It's just more City 17 and Combine Citadel. Episode 2
is much better, with new enemies and more varied levels. I really
enjoyed the final battle this time, having got a bit frustrated by it
last time I played. I wonder if Episode 3 will come out before the

My wife's verdict on the DS version of Harvest Moon, based on the first year

interface is a bit rubbish, though. You can get used to it, but it never

Just been reading about it, and it does seem to be surprisingly bug-
free for a Harvest Moon game. Might give it a go, then. I wasn't sure
whether to get the DS one or the Wii version which is out in a week or
two, but I think I'm more likely to actually play it on a handheld.

I know, but I'm not doing the whole thing again just to save her :)

Got a bum-loving 8 from EG, on the main page now.

If you saved him last time, the game will be a lot easier if you use the
same save.

Yeah. Would be nice if the cloak worked on bosses though :)

Hmm, I'm not sure I agree with that site at all...
My best achievement: Cup Qualification in Fifa: Road to the World Cup? I
don't bloody think so! Try completing Time Pilots without losing a
life... At least it put Call of Duty 2 on top.

Paper Mario (Wii VC) - finished this. It was generally pretty good,
but towards the end I thought it dragged a bit - certainly Bowser's
castle seemed to go on and on with recycled sections and was just
generally a tedious grindy let-down until the boss fight. They should
have just gone straight to that, really. The game also suffered a bit
from not having anything like as funny a script as Super Paper Mario
(and presumably TTYD).
Hitman: Blood Money (PS2) - I thought I'd have a go at a couple of
levels in different ways, and somehow lucked my way to Silent Assassin
on one of them (the theatre level) despite firing four shots. I didn't
think you could get SA if you ever used a gun, even on Normal
difficulty.
> WANT
A half-decent sandboxy game. I played GTA:SA so much that I can hardly
bear to look at it any more :-) but I miss having something like that
to just mess around on for a bit. HBM isn't bad for that in a weird
sort of way, but it's hardly what you'd call a sandbox really.
> BIN
Having to collect those four Bub-olb (or whatever they were called)
seeds in Paper Mario to unlock one of the chapters. I already had them
by then, but if you'd got that far without collecting them it would
surely have been very annoying to have to go back and look everywhere
for no good reason.
