Links 2004 vs Tiger Woods 2009 - The St Andrews Challenge
Tiger Woods 2009 is out next Friday (29th August). I thought it might be fun
to compare round scores on the same course across both games. The only
course in common is St Andrews and this is locked on Links at the start.
According to Gamefaqs this unlocks all the courses.

I suggest a zero stat (or close to zero, the free stat points are fine)
intermediate player is used in both games. Medium pins, medium wind,
championship tees. This is definately possible in Links, not sure about TW09
but we'll cross that bridge next week.

Anyway, post your round scores in this thread making sure you mention which
game it came from. If you're really brave you can comment on why TW09 is the
better game too.

Sunday 14th September is the closing date for entries. If you get
significantly better scores in one game it would be interesting to post some
ideas of why that is.

Any takers?

Sounds like an interesting idea. I'll have a pop at Links some time during
the week.
I'm pretty sure that St Andrews has always been one of the unlockables in TW
games, rather than being available from the start, so you'll probably need
to play a bit then start a new character once you've unlocked it.

Quidco shouldn't have any effect on the dispatch and delivery.

..and ditto. I'm still slightly ashamed at buying what is, in essence, Just
Another Iteration of a game I've bought twice previously, but meh.

Oh they know who you are alright. They got you pegged and you sleepwalk
up to them with the dosh every time. ;)

...That said, for some strange reason I find myself drawn to this one. I
downloaded the demo over a week ago and didn't bother to even try it,
but I'd still like a good golf game for the 360.

I think the online play is doing it for me, but I will definitely need
to practice before trying out against any of you -which is why I need to
get it on release so as to have some chance (well that's as good an
excuse as any). Then again, I know most of you will have been playing
for years.

Another reason I'd like to get it is because I know the kids won't stick
around watching me play it too long. I prefer to keep the 360 "for me",
but lately they've been invading that space. This should/ might get rid
of the little blighters. For a while at least.

I haven't played a Tiger Woods game since... er, 2004. On the Gamecube.
If nothing else, this one will look a bit better.

One of the big attractions for me is the Gamernet stuff, which worked
reasonably well in 08 but was crippled by the lack of people on my friends
list who actually bought the game. Hopefully there will be enough people
tempted back by 09 that it can fulfil its potential.
Golf, online, is a wonderful, social game but the big disadvantage is that
it's fairly time consuming. As well as addressing that this year by
introducing a Links-style 'simultaneous play' option, Gamernet allows TW to
have something close to the sort of private leaderboard battles that we all
have in XBLA games. Say I get round St Andrews in 53 shots, and am
exceptionally pleased with myself. I can post the whole round to Gamernet
and send details to all of my friends who have the game, who can then play
the full 18 holes alongside (the saved version of) me at their leisure.
Further, say I hit a recovery shot from the rough that clips the edge of a
bunker flies up into the air and lands inches from the hole - I can not only
show everyone the replay, but also challenge them to produce a better shot
from the same position, providing a much quicker shorter challenge for
people to try.
How can all of that *not* be brilliant?

So does that mean in a sort of XSN fashion, you could play 4 rounds on
different courses with different conditions and then send them to bods
on your friends list. After they've played their rounds the scores
would be available to collate?

Yes, but unlike XSN there's nothing to stop them from giving up on rounds if
they're playing badly or repeatedly playing the round until they were happy
with their score. So, in essence, it still relies on trust (to determine
that they haven't taken multiple attempts to do it) but you do get to see
proof that they have recorded the score they claim with the conditions they
claim. Oh, and the other possible limitation is that in 08 you only have 3
upload slots that can be active at any one time. Don't know whether 09 will
expand on that or not.

Given that FIFA has allowed the creation of private user tournaments from
within the game for the last few iterations I reckon it'll just be a matter
of time before the TW games allow the same. At which point you can finally
stop pining for Links. ;)

Strange realy as golf is a perfect game for comps, as XSN showed.

Now if EA buy out Take 2 perhaps there might be a new one. ;)

dosen't see it.
