Search Play.com from your phone while shopping!
Hi,

I've created a page that lets you search Play.com from your mobile
phone, so you can check on-line prices, stock, and delivery when
you're out shopping. Play's own website breaks on most mobile phones.

Great way to save loads, because sometimes Play.com have stuff at huge
discounts compared to the hight street, so you can find out how much
cheaper the online price is and decide if it's worth waiting.

See http://cms.da.gp for more info or simply enter the URL 'da.gp'
into your mobile phone's browser (enter simply by pressing keys
'32147' on a standard keypad - totally unforgettable from the first
time you use it!).

I've been doing this for almost two years just by using Play's own site. Or,

If Play.com and Gamestracker works well on your phone, then that's
great for you. But it doesn't work well on many phones. My K810i is a
fairly recent and typically specified phone, and it totally breaks on
that. Forget a V3 RAZR or 6230i or whatever.

With mobile web, you always have to think beyond your own personal
experience, because there are as many user-experiences as there are
Phone x Firmware x Network permutations.

Other people have said that they find G-Portal useful, particularly
for searching Play.com. (see http://cms.da.gp or just enter URL
'da.gp' in your phone - keys 32147 on a standard keypad)

I have a K810i, have you tried the free Opera Mini web browser? It's
superb, and I've not encountered any problems using it. I've just
checked Play and Gamestracker and they're both fine with it.

+1. Opera Mini works flawlessly on my Motorola K1 as it did on my

What, blokes in the UK are forbidden to use clam-shell phones? I'm glad

K1s (and clamshell Motorolas in general) are exclusively for Girls 'n' Gays in
the UK. I think it says so on the box.

I mean, if you're a girl, or a gay, then good for you and all. :)

I think you'll find he was winding you up, the smiley faces should have

right :-) ....... <- smiley.

No, they really do say on the box "Not for sale to heterosexual males".

Yup, Opera Mini is a fantastic piece of software - I've also used it
to access full web sites (even coped admirably with paying through
eBay/PayPal).

However, it's not mainstream - only a relatively small number of
people will use this way of accessing the web. One of the problems
I've encountered with J2ME is that a lot of KVMs aren't configured for
network access - browsers and KVMs seem to have their own separate
settings, so you quite often get the problem that a user can download
the app, but it wont work for HTTP. I expect this will improve, but
don't count on network operators not throwing a spanner in the works!
They see Opera Mini as taking away their walled gardens (or electric
fences, as they've become!)

No, I mean KVM; the Kilobyte Virtual Machine which is the reference
implementation of a JVM for embedded applications (e.g. phones).
Still, it is a JVM of sorts, just somewhat cut down (for example, it
requires pre-verification of bytecode, hence to reflection or dynamic
class-loading).
