u aint gonna believe this
I just bought a PSP for my son from GAMESTATION, I thought I would get
a 2nd hand machine as I wanted to CFW it too with DAX CFW, I tried to
update with for sony's OFW and it said could get get file 4.01, I
thought it must be my memory card so left it as I hadnt CFW it yet,
anyways, I later was waiting for someone to come online and help me
out CFW as I only done it once, when I was just checking settings, it
had 3.90 M33 system software on it already!!

Jeez...that is illegal GAMESTATION! I dont mind, saved me the hassle
of Pandora batterry etc, I just ran the update whe I realised it was
already CFW, but Joe Normal, if he bought that, he would womder wtf
was going on...it was dead handy for me...

I do not believe custom firmware is illegal, it just invalidates any warranty
if installed. The only part that is illegal though, by your admittance
recently, is what you intend to use the firmware for.

I'm still surprised Gamestation sold a hacked machine though. I can only
assume that they didn't test it thoroughly before putting it on sale.

ok maybe it is not illegal, according GAME it is, but there, who
cares, you? obviously, BUT it is against GAMESTATION selling policy,
selling CFW consoles, GAME say they have to check system settings in
case people try trading them modded consoles with CFW, Sony dont like
it, ok its Not illegal...but it is illegal for a store like
GAMESTATION to sell modified consoles advertising them as Sony un
modified consoles...there you have poke your nose in everywhere dont
you dekay...jeez...oh well its a sad life,

and LISTER, what was that statement made by you about me and scoopex?
What was all that about? It appeared out of the blue in a thread...you
need a life too..

I dont need to write anything for Lister to post shite...hehehehehehh

it may not be illegal, strictly speaking, but the main high street
retailers usually shy away from accepting modded consoles as trade,
just to be on the safe side.

i know when i used to work for Game that it was company policy to not
accept any console as trade that looked as if it had been modified,
which usually involved simply checking the stickers on the cases for
signs of removal/tampering, etc.

what they could get done for is selling under the trade descriptions
act, and you could have problems trying to return it if it were
faulty, and they then 'discovered' it was modded and refused to touch
it, even though it was sold to you in that way, it'd be very hard
indeed to prove that to them.

Poked his nose in? He made a reply to a public newsgroup. You made an
inaccurate statement, he merely corrected it, without any flaming or malice.
You seriously need a reality check.

I'll give you that one.

Thats not true. I took my modified PSP to game and they gave me cash for
it. So although they may preech about it, in my case they didn't seem
bothered. I hope someone gets a modded PSP, it'll save someone hassle.

well, that or they didn't know how to check it was modified, or didnt
even know you could modify a psp.

But do they advertise them as unmodified? Or do they just sell them as
consoles? I don't recall them ever having a sticker on them saying
"unmodified".

There I was thinking usenet was a place for people to discuss stuff.
Perhaps you expected it to be more like a private diary where you post
stuff and hope nobody replies?

Oh, I'm sure. Mind you, a friend of mine bought a chipped GC (not
realising it was chipped until he asked me what the switch was for) from
Game a few years ago, and another friend bought a modded Saturn from the
same shop a few years before that.

On the other side, someone from work tried to trade in a GBA SP at Game
and they wouldn't accept it as they'd applied some sort of vinyl
transfer kit to it, and they said that counted as "modified".

lol yeah, tbh it all depended on the member of staff you got, which is
often the case still it seems.

as i'm sure you're quite aware, as i became abundantly so, the vast
majority of Game's staff will have minimal knowledge of games and
consoles, full stop.

it used to really do my head in working there.

I was in Cex yesterday buying FEAR and Serious Sam 2. I think, with
the little one on the way, I must be beginning to look more like a
clueless father. The staff member saw fit to go into a monologue
about how FEAR was a really good game, and then despite me trying
to interrupt her and say that I knew the game already, she described
just what sort of game it was to me, why I should buy it, and what
would happen in the game.
Then, her team mate spotted Serious Sam 2. He joined in, telling me
that it was a really great game, that it was a first person shooter,
and that it was like Doom.

I suppose it didn't cross his mind that if I was buying Serious Sam 2
I might have already played Serious Sam.

I just left the shop a bit baffled.

That post, Toby, seriously made me laugh, must have a mindbending
experience...heheheh....did they really think you knew nothing about
those games?

That shop really does take the piss, I mean when the Wii was hard to
get, they upped the price to double thr normal retail price, I said,
sod that, I will wait a week or 2, and then a week later I got 1 Wii
for the normal retail price, went back there, and was not surprised to
see that they had the Wii marked up at the same double price as week
before..I told them they were con artists to their faces, they did not
like that...but that is me, straight up..your ripping people off, I am
aint paying that, however, some of their games(although 2nd hand) are
quite cheap.

NO, they advertise as 2nd hand Official PSP's not Modified, they said
to me today that it must ahve come from warehouse, they hadnt checked,
and then asked what firmware it was to look for in future in case of
this kind of trade in...I know them, they knew I didnt mind as they
know what I do, like GAME's manger in Camden, he adivises on Custom
firmware and NDS M3 cards etc...does it himself..

No, it's your sarcastic one liners that say it all, well, nothing but
pisstaking really...like this post, by saying that GAMESTATIION should
state whether its an unmodified console on the packing when they are
official gamestore selling by the book, not like Game Focus or
CEX...most people who go to Gamestation dont expect to buy modified
consoles without prior knowledge, and I think its their policy not
sell modified consoles even if they do slip by now and then...
