Analyst: Next-Gen Consoles + Handhelds Coming In 2010
Analyst: Next-gen coming in 2010

by Kyle Orland Feb 14th 2008 3:45PM

Remember when the term "next generation" meant systems like the N64
and original PlayStation? Those were the days. Now the term next
generation can only be legally applied to the post-PSWii60 systems
that are no doubt being planned as we speak. While no one knows
anything for sure about these units yet, that hasn't stopped Pacific
Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson from predicting a 2010 start date
for the next console cycle.

Talking about EA's bullish revenue projections, Wilson let slip to
Gamespot that he believes Nintendo will launch first, followed by
Microsoft later in the year (no word on when the assumed PS4 will
come). On the portable side, Wilson also predicts the next round of
Nintendo DS and Sony PSP hardware will appear sometime in 2010, though
it's not clear whether he's calling for a new chipset or just another
redesign.

If these predictions pan out, that means you only have 687 to 1051
days to save up for a very expensive year.

I just hope that Sony continues with its tech pushing. Hopefully they wont
abandon the Cell technology. Maybe this time they'll match it up with more
memory and a better graphics chip. We'll see... not that i'm in a rush to
find out. Not to mention i think 2010 would be way too soon.

The PS3 wasn't even suppose to have a Graphic's Chip. The Cell was suppose
to do it all, but it just wasn't capable and a GPU added late in the PS3's
Development. I would also guess for a new Xbox in 2010 or 2011, that's
5-6 years, and longer then the first Xbox. I don't believe Nintendo will be
the first out with a Next Gen Console. I think they can and will milk the
Wii for quite a while yet. You still can't generally find one in the store
YET! What will the next Nintendo system add? All there will be is the same
old Nintendo games upgraded a bit. Don't need a another system for that. I
think they will wait long enough to release a HD console for cheap. It'll be
basically a HD Wii. The PS3 will be around a while. Sony already said 10
year life span. Sales of the PS3 have been Slow, so I think if anything
Release of a PS4 would be delayed longer. I think MS will be out of the
gate FIRST with the next gen system once again. At the very least they
WON'T let Sony get a year ahead start like with the PS2. I can only hope
MS has learned it's lessen with the RROD problems and make sure the next
system is really put though the tests much better. If the 360 didn't have
the RROD problems the 360 sales would have been far higher, and the PS3 and
Wii sales lower.

2010 will be hear in no time flat.

Was it because the Cell couldnt do it all, or was it because of the learning
curve? I mean, can you imagine if all developers had was the cell? As it
stands now, almost all devs stated that getting 'something' up and running
was easy, though getting it running well took time. I'd imagine this was
helped along by having a somewhat standard GPU part.

The Cell just didn't have the power Sony was expecting. Have to remember
Graphic Performance is increasing greatly. You design the Cell with one
thing in mind, and the performance of the GPU's are skyrocketing each year,
by the time the PS3 was released, the graphic's would have been sub-par
already. Sony saw this happening and installed a GPU. I'm sure
programming on the GPU is easier, but there's still the Cell that has to be
dealt with and it has it's own set of problems. Personally I think both
systems are about evenly matched, it's just features of one system over the
other. For example The 360 has LIVE and the PS3 has Blu-Ray.

I still have ZERO interest in a PS3 at this time. I don't have enough time
to play my 360. I'm hoping to buy a 50" 1080P Plasma before the end of the
month though. No bad my 360 doesn't have HDMI, may have to try VGA for the
360 instead or buy a new 360.
