PSP: Argh, it seems i gave in to the dark side....again.
ok, well i blame ebay, not my own weak will, but either way, I have
just bought a PSP with v2.71 firmware for the grand total of £67.
i've toyed with the idea of getting one again on and off for a few
months now, and when i saw an auction ending soon, at a reasonably low
price, i thought it was worth a gamble (though i bet it's annoyed the
next highest bidder, who i outbid by £2 with 2 seconds left...)
Anyway, just after some info/links on where to look for a guide on how
to install this custom firmware that allows you to play ps1 games on
the thing.
I had a quick google, but most of the sites i looked at seemed to
assume some prior knowledge of firmware upgrading/downgrading, which
seems a somewhat different beast to when i last had a v1.5 PSP.
any tips or links would be appreciated, just so i don't go blundering
off and brick the thing within minutes of getting my hands on it.
cheers lads.
(x-posted to ugvm and ugvh mainly because .misc seems to get more
traffic :) )

BTW, it hasn't shown up in ugvm, you put ugvh in the newsgroup field twice!

IIUC, 2.71 is too late. This page has a changeability chart:
<http://www.psp-vault.com/module-htmlpages-display-pid-14.psp>
(And yes, that really does appear to be the URL.)

There's an automated 2.71 to 1.5 downgrader that works a treat that I
used to do mine.

Yeah and the previous 3.40 CFW would too.
Just a case of ripping your games to your PC then converting them.
I use PopstationGUI (google it) to make the eboot.
If you like EMU stuff then the Capcom CPS1/2 and NeoGeo ones are superb.

The M33s let you do PS3 linkage. I've been running a very old DarkAlex
fw, 3.10 OE-A since it came out about a year ago, and it's played every
PS1 game I've thrown at it perfectly.

Aye, I used to use 3.40OE until I got my PS3, and then switched to
3.80-M33 to get PS3 compatibility. Which I proceeded to use twice, and
then put the PSP back in its drawer where it has languished ever since.

well as i don't have a ps3 that's not a major use for me. :)

While I can certainly see the attraction of unlocking the PSP to play
homebrew (I hate that word) and PS1 games, surely downgrading the PSP to
firmware version 1.5 means that all commercial games will suddenly become
unplayable, due to needing a newer firmware? So is it a choice between the
two, or am I missing something?

Yep, the custom firmware is/was a bastardised version of the then latest
Sony FW and v1.5 so you had the best of both worlds.
Now, you use the official Sony upgrader to get the latest official features
and a patch to allow you to run v1.5 stuff.
So you now have a choice of all the official features plus PS1 compatibility
but no EMU's or, install the v1.5 patch to run all your EMU's and apps but
you lose Location Free Player and Korean fonts, which isn't a great loss to
most.
