Going online with DS?
I admit, I can't even remember the last time I went online with the DS but
I'm hankering for some Animal Crossing action but I really am not in the
mood for dropping my Wi-Fi router down to WEP just so I can do it. Just in
case you weren't aware of how broken WEP is
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7052223.stm
Short of spending cash on a USB Wi-Fi access point, is there any possibility
of Nintendo offering a firmware update or maybe using the Wii as an access
point? I know the Wii already offers WPA and theres rumours of being able to
download DS demos from the Wii shop soon so it's not that much of a stretch,
surely?
Ah Sod it, I'm just going to play AC offline for now!
Lord Deckard.
PS As an aside, I've just done a search for access points and there are at
least 15 near me, 5 are running WEP and 2 have no protection at all! And one
of them is a business with the SSID set as it's name. Oh dear.....

i *think* there's a 3rd party firmware update for the DS that
implements WPA support, but don't take my word on that, nor if it does
exist, do i accept responsibility if it bricks your DS! ;)

No chance. Nintendo have stated the DS doesn't have the grunt to do real-time
WPA en/decryption as well as play games.

It's not a rumour - it's confirmed! As for using it as an access point - I'm
not sure that's possible?

Well, there's your solution ;)

Why not use one of your neighbour's WEP networks for your DS in the mean time? ;)

Re: Going online with DS?
Combine WEP with a MAC address filter, and things shouldn't be so bad.

I'd love to play if you're game. I simply have an access point dedicated
to AC which I firewall and turn off when I'm not playing online DS
games.

Indeed. There are ways to lock down WEP. It's not _100%_ secure, but who
cares? It's enough to frustrate most script kiddies. It's not like we're
doing online banking in AC, after all.
