Got a GC at launch, and haven't had a single problem with it.  There will 
always be some bad units, but overall Nintendo tends to build a sturdier 
machine than the competition.  They offer a much better factory warranty, 
too.

Nintendo always looks at the bottom line. A lot of morons finally
started getting a glimmering of understanding that console hardware can
start out being sold at a loss, although they still don't get that
console hardware design should be improved over time to actually start
turning profits. It is mainly xflop fanbitch idiots that haven't quite
understood this concept yet since they are the ones that have this
strange understanding that losing money on the console hardware over
the entire life of the console is somehow a good thing. The Gamecube
was different in this generation that the console hardware started out
from the gate breaking even and then making more profit over time.
Nintendo is not number one in sales right now but they are very well
positioned for this next generation and it looks like the Revolution
will also be selling for near break-even prices right out of the gate.
Nintendo America is building a huge expansion in Redmond, for good
reasons.

That combined with the fact that the PS2 would have exponentially more 
playing time than the gamecube in 90% of households pretty much clears that 
up.

Not really, I know about three (out of five) people who play more cube. 
I've never had a Nintendo product break. x2 each for ps1 and 2 though.

    Half of MS evaluation of the console market was wrong (that Sony was 
pushing the PS2 to be a replacement for computers), or at the very least, 
exaggerated.  If MS ultimately decides that the console market is not worth 
winning, they will have to cut their losses and leave.  The prediction is 
that console publishing/developement this generation is going to be so 
expensive and difficult it will eat into any profit that might be made. 
Growith in the console gaming audience also will not come easily, and 
indeed, the number of dollars chasing console gaming may not grow much, if 
at all.  The bottom line is that the majority of Microsoft's interest is in 
the PC, they cannot afford to have the XBox be a money pit forever, 
especially as Apple will be a new threat to their dominance in the upcomming 
years.

Do you realize that Microsofts evaluation was dead on? Just wait and see what 
the PS3 does when it comes out and with future upgrades. This is not a console 
war to Microsoft but a war for our living rooms and they will lose whatever 
money it takes to win that war. I just hope Sony can hang on and continue to 
give MS competition forcing them to keep cost down and the product great.
