WTD: Old Gamecube
Hi,
It turns out that in order to make Freeloader work I need an old version
of the Gamecube (with the serial number DOL-001). Does anyone know of
the cheapest place to pick up a secondhand Cube? Thanks in advance.

Whoever told you that? I thought the Freeloader and AR discs worked on
any Gamecube revision.

I've read it on several internet message boards, and I've also got a
copy of Freeloader (V1.06) without any kind of cosmetic damage to the
disc which won't work in my new Gamecube, but will in my friend's old
one. If there's any kind of work-around solution I'd be grateful for it.

On the offchance your trying to boot dvdr the cube is very fussy about media
and burn quality and generally needs a laser tweak.

I don't want to give away my current Gamecube (it's a pretty white one -
goes nicely with my Dreamcast!). As I said before, I just want to know
where the cheapest place to buy a second-hand Gamecube would be.
Also, for those who seem to doubt that this problem exists, have a look
at this Google search:

Quite a few of the things are either in German or Italian but the gist
of it is pretty clear.

The Gamestation near me has them for about £35 I think (unboxed with
no games). You may be lucky and get a cheaper one on ebay if you can be
sure it's the right model. I'm just very surprised that the Freeloader
disc doesn't work at all. What do Datel have to say about this?

I think it's a problem with the disc itself. I had that with my gamecube
with one of the action replay discs. Getting another one fixed the problem
altogether. Although I think the other disc had some rust or defect on the
edge, which could've been defective in that way.

That's my Cube model number...and it isn't *that* old.

Maybe fussy of media in that respect, however, I bought Waverace off eBay,
off a dickhead who called it "mint" in the listing - it looked like some
little mall rat had been eating his fish fingers and Alphabites off it each
evening.....it is *SO* beat-up, it is unreal. It plays perfectly, every
single time. If I tried to play a PS2 disc, or DVD on my DVD player, in such
a state, the respective machines would just stand there, hands in plastic,
moulded pockets, shrugging their plastic, moulded shoulders at me. ;)

It certainly doesn't bode well for the Revolution being region free if
Nintendo has taken steps to stop Freeloader working in newer GameCubes. :(

Datel has I think stopped bothering supporting the Gamecube right now to be
honest. Their PAL support has vanished. (That or their just updating codes
do be downloaded by the AR MAX Evo) They haven't updated Freeloader either
for a while.
However, sometimes you can get a duff disc from Datel which the Gamecube
will not load as it cannot read the disc at all. I have had a few of them
from them. You could try getting a replacement but they're not that good
for that either. I wish they take off the forum link as well on their site
since that's been down forever.
I think the next version will be like the PS2's. It have to have a
automated eject Freeloader/Action Replay disc before inserting a game before
it selects the codes for that game. That's if they can be bothered mind
you. Gamecube version of both products isn't as good as the PS2 versions.
