OT: Equivelent UK PS2 newsgroup?
Finally got myself a PS2, to get hold of its few must haves that kept
nagging at me from the shop shelves....MGS3, GT4, Pro Evo 5 etc...but mostly
for the upcoming Shadow Of The Colossus and joint re-release of ICO, and so
I wanted to know what the PS2's UK equivalent [and busiest] newsgroup to
this and the UK Xbox group is??? I can't seem to find one, but I have NTL
news service and it is *poor* - is there one?
I'm trying to find help on connecting to its network for its [small few]
network enabled games....is there any multi-format owning peeps here who use
it, especially with NTL.

for PS2, it's uk.games.video.playstation
for Xbox, it's uk.games.video.xbox

I've never done it, but as far as i know, you stick an ethernet cable in
the back of it (assuming it's a new, slim PS2, else you need a network
adapter), and then you need a network configuration disc from Sony.

Yeah, it's a slim one (that's OK though as I have no HDD/online Final
Fantasy plans...good job really). Just mooched on NTL Hell, and it seems you
do just plug in, reset the modem, and use a Network start-up disc from Sony
(just applied for mine). Which makes sense as I can plug my modem into a
lap-top, and bingo....I'm online - no messing.
Then you are *supposed* to tell NTL you want to pay them yet even more money
than you currently pay them, for their console service......but you simply
don't - and play at will. This is what many NTL cable modem users seem to be
doing freely, according to the forums. I use loads less bandwidth than most
NTL users - I use bandwidth like dial-up, yet I'm paying for broadband, so I
have no qualms with doing it sneakily.
Routers/networks are over my head too, so I can well live with the
hot-swaps. Great. :)
Thanks for the tip on the PS2 group BTW - now it's showing up, before it
never - maybe I misspelled.

Never used NTL before, but if you've got ethernet coming out of your
modem, I think all you'd need is a wired ethernet switch to get
everything plugged in at once (no configuration nececary).
Something like this:

If your swapping between your ps2 and pc the modem neads rebooting between
each swap beacause of there different macs. Else the modem wont work. You
can stick another £5 network card in your pc and connect that to ps2 or use
the ethernet to usb dongle ntl ususally give you to pipe your internet into
the pc and the ethernet port to connect to ps2.

I plugged it into my router, and it Just Worked. I have NTL, and a Linksys
BEFSR41 router. My PS2 (and Xbox) are now wirelessly networked though - I
have a D-Link mini-switch next to my TV, with a Netgear Wireless Bridge
plugged into that, along with the Xbox, PS2 and NES. I then have a Belkin WAP
plugged into my router.

Yeah, I know about the reset/reboot that's needed. I read of many people who
plugged in and said "Oh well, doesn't work". I know from trying to plug into
a lap-top that a reboot of the modem is needed, otherwise it still thinks
it's my PC.....which, as you say, has a different MAC address.

What is this strange language you speak? ;) Now this *is* going a wee bit
over my head. Besides, everytime I look into it...and plan to get a router,
all the ones in the shops say they are ADSL routers......but I'm cable, like
you. Is this "Linksys BEFSR41 router" especially for cable broadband or
something? As IF I can get one that works easily, I'll go for on of these.
Cheers.

It's an "ADSL/Cable" router. Basically, as long as you have a broadband modem
with an RJ45 port on it, it should work.
And yes, I'm using it with NTL. There's probably a newer version (probably
with wifi too) about now. Mine is almost three years old.

Hi, If you not going wireless here is what you will need
3x Ethernet Cables..
1x Router with 4 port hub( I have same one as dekay mentioned, you can pick
that up for £25-30)..
1x ethernet Card for pc if u dont already have one.
Plug in the router, Connect an ethernet cable from the modem ethernet port
to the router wan port. It will be labelled as WAN port. [Make sure to
unplug the modem USB connection to pc]. Plug in ethernet cable from pc to
router. Plug in Ethernet cable from PS2 to router, and thats it, now
configure the router for optimal performance via the web browser.
You then can run Xbox Live, Xbconnect, PS2 even Mario Kart Double Dash all
online.
Its the same principle for wireless you just remove the need for cables and
get wireless adapters, although you would still have to wire the modem to
wireless router and configure it for security. Or as mentioned u can use a
WAP to get wireless on top of wired router.

Thanks for posting that, I appreciate it. I'm clearer on it now. I suppose
it would be better than swapping over and rebooting my modem between PC and
PS2, so I will definitely pursue a router soon - and also I wouldn't mind
getting Mario Kart DD on the go, what Nintendo peripheral do I get for
getting my cube online? Do they do a network kit like for the old type PS2?
Cheers.

For the GC you would need a GC Broadband Adapter and a free program called
'warp pipe' which u can download. I read on the forums that noone really
plays that much since MK DS, so it may be best to see who's willing to play
first before shelling out 20-30 quid for an adapter.
I was intending to get an adapter myself, but the thought of noone willing
to play is putting me off. If there is a few ppl willing to play, id get one
yesterday.
You can pick up the official Nintendo adapters on ebay.
You can get the software here http://cubeonline.warppipe.com
Let us know if u decide to get one, coz id be up for a few games :)

Re: Equivelent UK PS2 newsgroup?
Well I've got my eye on a new router, the same as the one most commonly
mentioned in this thread as it happens...but will probably have a bash with
just my modem, if the network start up disc arrives from Sony before I get
the chance to buy it.
I can't wait now.....does anyone know from experience how long Sony take to
get your starter pack out? (through registration of new slim PS2's). Thanks.
Just got Pro Evo 5, is that up and running on the network? I bloody hope so.
I also simply can't wait for MGS3: Snake Eater: Subsistence....for its
online mode (if not for the improved single player camera too). It looks
very basic capture the flag, like, but it's MGS FFS.....I'll be in heaven.
:)
Thanks for all your help, and sorry for the OT post. Just that the PSX group
is SO bloody quiet - you/us GCN fans should be proud of our good showing on
Usenet! Has the PSX group always been so bloody quiet? This one and the Xbox
one make it seem deserted by comparison. ;)
Cheers, all. :-)

What cabling do I need with an Ethernet switch method? I want to have just
my PC and PS2 in use without hotswapping the Ethernet cable I presently
have, that NTL supplied. Do I need 'crossover' or patch/'straight
through'...or both? I'm getting my Linksys or Netgear Ethernet switch this
week, so I could use knowing what cables to get. Presently I just have one
NTL given Ethernet cable going from my modem to my PC's Ethernet port - I
think that is a crossover type...unsure though. Thanks. :)

No no, the one I have going from my modem to my PC is a patch one. Oops.
