What GC games are any good?
I've got a new GC with no games so am looking for recommendations. I like
decent racing games but am not limited to that genre.

I can only recommend three GC games:

Eternal Darkness - one of the best games of it's generation.

Super Monkey Ball

Viewtiful Joe

Agreed.

Agreed.

Top of your to-get list should be Resident Evil 4.

F-Zero GX is the best racer on the 'cube - it's absolutely stonking and
still looks great compared to racers released since on other consoles.

Paper Mario and Tales of Symphonia are both great RPG's if you like that
kind of thing. Paper Mario is possibly my favourite GC game.

A few cracking imports about, too if you're into that kinda thing. Kuru
Kuru Kurin Paradise and Cubic Lode Runner being shining examples!

Resident Evil 4 is widely regarded as the best game on Cube, and with
the possible exception of Halo and GTA: San Andreas, the best game of
this generation. Zelda: Wind Waker is also wonderful if you like
adventuring. Monkey Ball is a must if you have any friends whatsoever,
F-Zero GX is the best racer on the Cube, followed by Burnout 2 and
Mario Kart, Viewtiful Joe is an insane 2D platformer/beat-em-up hybrid,
and if you like platformers then some will tell you Mario Sunshine is
the way to go, but I personally hated it and strongly recommend Rayman
3 over it. If you like beat-em-ups, Soul Calibur 2 is the best by far,
but for a big multiplayer blast and something a bit more light-hearted
then Super Smash Bros. Melee is also great. There's also Star Wars
Rogue Leader, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime and Prince Of Persia:
Sands Of Time that are highly regarded for various reasons.

My personal favourite Cube game: Sonic Adventure DX. A straight port of
a Dreamcast masterpiece that a lot of people really don't like, so if
you see it cheap enough to risk it, buy it, you may love it as much as
I do.

"highly regarded for various reasons"... man talk about damning by faint
praise...

Metroid Prime (and MP2) are insanely good.

I've never played Resident Evil IV, so that may take the crown these
days, but Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness get my vote for super
immersive don't-wanna-stop-playing goodness. They're both drenched with
atmosphere (obviously very different!); ED is somewhat slower more
creepy, and MP is fast-paced (with _excellent_ and responsive controls).

WTF? F-Zero GX, a stunningly good game, I admit. BUT, it is a game that has
followed the tradition of the previous F-Zero games, by keeping graphics to
a bare minimum to give you the speed that a game like this so desperately
needs. Nearly every other racing game, on every other console looks better
(imo).... but few will be as good as regards actual gameplay - the most
important factor.

You aint kidding. Genius game, from a genius developer.

To the OP....some racing games of note....(although Gamecube was not the
right choice for someone with a penchant for racing games, sorry to burst
your bubble, like)

Burnout 2
F-Zero GX
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Waverace: Blue Storm (criminally underrated by the people that just didn't
'get' the control scheme, that once mastered, reveals its truly hidden
beauty - it also still rivals arcade format water racing games in terms of
graphics)
1080 is also good - but not as good as it should have been, by a long, long
shot.

The best game for gamecube is Metroid Prime (and its sequel, Echoes).

Anyway there are many good titles most of them are the best in their
genre:

Resident Evil 4
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Super Mario Sunshine
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Eternal Darkness
Viewtiful Joe
Pikmin 2
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (remake of the original one appeared on
PSX)

If you like conventional racing games you will be probably not
satisfied of what gamecube has to offer. There is not a GranTurismo
like game. The best racing game however is F-Zero GX.

Good job really, it's hardly a racers paradise. F-Zero GX is the best,
it's insanely fast, very pretty, and I think it's great. Steep learning
curve though. Waverace is also good and can probably be picked up for
next to nothing. R: Evolution is about the only "realistic" racer I can
think of, it's not bad but would be best played with a wheel I reckon.

Immediate must haves:

Metroid Prime (though this seems a bit hit 'n' miss with people - mostly
disliked by those who are used to playing FPS games on consoles).
Eternal Darkness
Resident Evil 4 (RE game in controls-not-that-shit shocker!)
Zelda: The Wind Waker (apart from some tedious sailing bits)

Honourable mentions for Viewtiful Joe (mad) and also Tales of Symphonia
(if you like Jap RPGs).

Yes, I did like it, and having played the NTSC version I can't actually
see much of a difference anyway.

But then I'm crap at shooters, so that doesn't really matter.

Burnout 2 - I don't know if that is classed as "realistic", as it has very
arcadey physics, but it is excellent, and more in line with a 'normal'
racer.

I'm soon to buy a slimline PS2, partly because of the lack of realistic
racing games on the gamecube format (but buying it mainly for MGS3 & the
upcoming 'Shadow Of Colossus' game, I should add). Gran Turismo is still the
best racing series I have ever played.

For all it's eye candy, which is novel and nice, I thought PGR 1 & 2 on Xbox
was utterly soulless, I seriously regret buying that machine to get my
racing fix - not too late to put that right though, Gran Turismo 4 here I
come. Actually, This is what got me to buy a PSone in the N64 days, we
always seem to lose out on the racing genre, us Nintendo fans.

Ah, forgot that one - very good game, shame about the tightness of the
elastic band on the AI racing though.

Never got on with the GT series at all (despite it being one of the
reasons I bought a Playstation). Did quite like MSR on DC, but now I've
gone back to it after a few years I've totally forgotten how to play it
properly and so am finding it impossible.

How come they didnt carry on the burnout series on the cube? NFS
Underground + Most wanted is good on the cube also.
Your right Project Gotham apart from visuals has absolutly nothing going for
it, i sold it within 2 days of owning it, for the ultimate fix i turn to
Rallysport challenge 2 although i used to LOVE toca on the ps2.

Has anyone tried V Rally 3 on the cube?

Wot everyone else said, plus

Resident Evil (remake)
Resident Evil 0

Old style gameplay, yes, but that's not necesarily a bad thing. They both
look fantastic, and pack oodles and oodles of atmosphere. Use as a warm-up
for RE4.

Pikmin, Metriod Prime, and their sequels are also fantastic in different
ways. Both MP games are HARD, but quite unlike anything else anywhere.
