Nintendo DS redesign coming Jan. 16th?
Posted Jan 11th 2006 1:15PM by Christopher Grant

First the Reggie let it slip that the little dual screen handheld that
could was being considered for a fabulous makeover, then Japanese
gaming mainstay Famitsu reiterated the idea. Now we have a rumor from
well-regarded video game importers Lik-Sang that we may be treated to
the new DS model as early as January 16th! They write, "... here at Lik
Sang too we have received word a couple of days ago from a Japanese
contact stating Nintendo will have a formal announcement of the
re-design on Jan 16th." We'll have to wait... five more days...

While I don't think their products are shit, I have to somewhat agree.
A redesign of an already successful system is not an uncommon thing
for Nintendo to do. What's the big deal?

It's not like this new system is going to revolutionize the DS in some
way, I don't think. The system itself is all about ingenuity, there's
not really much else they can do to it without making it a different
system. Any changes are going to be purely cosmetic. Think of the
GameBoy Micro.. not as successful as they had hoped.

On the other hand, I find it quite odd that Nintendo would release
this right AFTER the biggest shopping season. People just recently
either bought or received the system, so they're not going to be all
that motivated to invest in a prettier version of the same thing.

Who knows.. either way I'll be grabbing one.

Try 15 years, that is about when Nintendo offered a newer style top
loading NES and offered the classic "fat" Gameboy in 5 different
colors just before introducing the Pocket line.

So wait. You question why they would release it, and then admit you're
going to buy one? You've answered your own question! *You're* the exact
reason they're (potentially) releasing it.

While I'm definitely a money-maker for Nintendo, I doubt that my
market (those that will just buy whatever they come out with, whenever
they come out with it) is large enough to support them. There's always
followers of a company that will purchase whatever they come out with,
but that's hardly the largest market share.

You need to market to the casual gamer.. the one that buys gaming
systems every year or so.. not the second they come out. If they
release a new DS, I think it will probably flop (or come quite close
to flopping). I don't expect it to be a raging success.

If Nintendo is directly marketing to that demographic, then they are
making a mistake.

It appears to be widescreen.

I wonder how that will work.

Stretch? Pillars?

Do you have any pictures or anything backing that up?

I find that kind of interesting, especially seeing as how all of the
games have been coded for the previous screen size. They can be
stretched, sure, but that reminds me of the stretch feature the
original GBA had for use with plain GameBoy games. It looked ugly.

Er, that's just someone's mockup, or "Artist's Impression", if you will;
it is not a picture of the actual new hardware, if it even exists yet.

I was considering getting a DS over Christmas, but when reading what
people who owned the system were saying about it, it seemed that a large
amount of people found it pretty uncomfortable to use.

Coupled with the (relatively) expensive outlay for console & game, I
decided to wait for the redesign and maybe a price drop of £10-20
because I am just tight. Or is it savvy? (Says he who saved up for an
N64 on launch, ouch, £250 and no games)

Anyway, I think a redesign of the system would be welcome, and I'd
certainly have my eye on buying it, and the rumours of a redesign have
frankly put me off buying the current model.

Naw, that must be a (bad) fake -- Nintendo would never design such
crappy controls.

Damn, that's a bit of a let down... No dual screen, no touch screen, no
stereo sound... With a system like that, developers won't bother
innovating and we'll have to go back to playing lazy, uninteresting
ports. ho-hum, it was good while it lasted...

Yep, good point. Proof that all geniuses are flawed. Typical Nintendo 'good
idea'. Whoever at Nintendo made that decision was probably the same eejit
that decides whether or not a game should have a 16:9 viewing mode...or
not.......not usually being the case. They are, for me, *the* greatest maker
of systems and games - but they make *the* most incomprehensible decisions
known to mankind. Almost up there with: "I know, let's go to war with
Iraq!". ;)

You are right, and Nintendo now know this. They're on the brink of risking
losing their hardcore fanbase, like myself, by their targeting the gamer
that doesn't like games. "Perhaps if they only have to use one hand, they
will buy our system"....kind of thing. They're great, Nintendo, but they're
also right bloody eejits. :)

My neighbour's two kids let me have a go of their PSP at Chrimbo - I played
for an hour or so on GTA, it was comfortable and highly enjoyable. I'm not
taking anything from the DS though, just righting a popular misconception.

I love the different games that are coming out for the DS. I also own a
PSP, PS2 and Gamecube. Although i am itrigued with the new Revolution
controller, but it does worry me about how games will play, but i can't
wait to find out
