Opera Software, a world leader in Web browser technology, today
announced that Nintendo's much anticipated new generation game console,
Wii, will use the Opera browser.

Users of the Wii console will browse the Internet using their consoles.

"Nintendo is clearly visionary in leading the gaming industry into the
new era in gaming, and a wonderful partner for Opera," says Jon von
Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "We are thrilled to expand our
partnership with Nintendo, and work with them to deliver the best
gaming experience on the Wii console and the Nintendo DS™."

"For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was
fast and secure with support for the latest standards including AJAX.
Opera proved perfect for our purposes and is an exceptional addition to
both the Nintendo DS and the Wii console," said Genyo Takeda, senior
managing director and general manager, Integrated Research &
Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.

Opera and Nintendo announced their partnership to deliver the full
Opera browser for the Nintendo DS on February 15, 2006. The Nintendo DS

Nintendo picks Opera for next games console

Nancy Gohring, IDG News Service

11/05/2006 09:30:05

Gamers using Nintendo's next generation Wii console will be able to
surf the Internet using a browser from Opera Software, the companies
said Wednesday.

Opera isn't revealing specific capabilities of the Wii browser, which
is still in development, but said it will be a full-featured browser.

While many current game consoles are connected to the Internet to
support multiplayer gaming, few of them allow full Web browsing. Some
consoles, like Microsoft's Xbox 360, don't come with browsers but users
can download limited functionality browsers to the console.

Wii customers will browse the Internet using the same controllers they
play games with, the companies said. Nintendo unveiled some details of
the controllers, which can sense motion and translate that motion into
action in the game, this week.

The browser may play a hand in incorporating Web technology into games,
an Opera spokeswoman said.

The announcement that Opera's browser will feature on the Wii console
follows the news that Opera is also supplying a browser for Nintendo's
handheld DS gaming device. Nintendo won't build the browser into the
Nintendo DS, but the software will be sold like a game cartridge in
Japan in July. The companies have not announced plans to sell that
browser in other markets, the Opera spokeswoman said.

Nintendo said it will start selling Wii around the world in the fourth
quarter.

Nintendo Wii will come with Opera browser
May 10, 2006 10:58 AM PDT

Nintendo's next-generation Wii video game console will feature the
Opera browser, Opera Software announced on Wednesday.

Wii users will browse the Internet using their consoles, navigating
sites via the new Wii remote controller, a two-handed, motion-sensitive
system that allows players to mimic actions on-screen with the movement
of their hands.

"For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was
fast and secure, with support for the latest standards, including
AJAX," said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager
of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division.

Earlier this year, Oslo, Norway-based Opera and Nintendo announced a
partnership to deliver a version of the Opera browser for Nintendo's DS
handheld. The Nintendo DS browser is scheduled for release in Japan
this summer.

"The Wii console will also help solve this problem. It can power up
virtual console games and applications like our Opera web browser saved
to Flash ROM almost as fast as a telephone or television in just a few
seconds."
