Nintendo 'rising to heaven' on DS sales - over 13.5 million worldwide
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141960.html

Sales exceed 13.5 million worldwide; Nintendo may be struggling to keep
enough units in Japanese channel.
The DS sales numbers keep coming in, and they're still good for
Nintendo's new portable. However, there is one problem--they may be too
good for Japanese gamers trying to buy one.

Only a few days after Nintendo announced sales figures for the DS in
America (nearly 4 million units), Nintendo of Europe today chimed in
with its own regional tally. The DS has sold roughly 3.5 million units
in Europe since its debut in March, bringing the global total to almost
13 million.

Like other regions, European gamers were gaga for Nintendogs, taking
1.6 million copies of the game for a walk. The recently released Mario
Kart DS is also off to a fast start, selling 800,000 copies since its
late November launch.

Nintendo's DS continues to sell well in its home country with more than
5 million sold--but that may slow down as available units are becoming
scarce. On its Japanese language Web page, Nintendo has issued an
apology to gamers trying to get in on the DS action. A rough
translation explains that stock of the item is low, and that more DSes
are expected to be in stores in late January.

Power to Nintendo for trying to do something new and succeeding. There can
never be enough innovation in gaming.

I bought a micro because I thought the DS was just a novelty, now I'm having
second thoughts (though the micro is very good).

How does it compare to the SP? I was considering one because it is so small
and portable, but am worried about getting cramped hands.

Is the micro's screen too small or good enough?

Maybe a newer SP with the brighter screen would be a better buy. I would use
it on airplanes and such so the size of the SP is probably good enough.

The screen is a thing of beauty - it's perfectly clear - in fact, it
seems slightly clearer than the new SP, probably due to the smaller size.

Not sure I follow the logic here - the only benefits the SP has over the
micro are the ability to play GB/GBC games, and a few quid cheaper.

Well, I am thinking that the micro's big advantage is its super slim size to
fit in any pocket and play anywhere.

If the SP's display is better (say due to being larger), and it is an easier
fit for adult hands, then gameplay wise the SP is a better choice, maybe.

I don't care about GB/GBC games, so it is purely about SP vs Micro.

If you have played both, which do you prefer?

I just wish I could find a demo version somewhere, but Nintendo seems
reluctant to do that, at least over here in Vancouver. The most I have seen is
a Nintendo rep with a slew of DS's strapped to her belt so that people can't
run off with them.

I prefer the Micro hands down. The new SP has a display which is slightly
nicer than the DS display, but the Micro display seems a lot sharper and
brighter due to the smaller size. Also, given the relatively low resolution
of the GBA, the small screen makes everything look a bit prettier.

As far as comfort goes, the micro is a lot more comfortable than the SP, in
my opinion. The spacing between pad and buttons is more or less the same as
on the SP, but the outward hinged shoulder buttons tend to lead to the
device being 'cradled' rather than supported by the button fingers, which
makes a big difference during a long session.

Cheers

In Japan, the GBASP is around 7000yen, while the GBM is around 12000yen.
That probably explains some of the difference in sales.

Followups set.
