Update: NOM does it again. Mario Kart speculation? Head on in for an
update...
According to a statement courtesy to CVG, apparently the report in the
official Nintendo magazine wasn't really... official at all.
"The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario
Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an
official announcement from Nintendo. We are sorry if we have mislead
anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises
profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused."
Here we go...again.
Original Report: A snippet in the recent UK Nintendo Official Magazine
reconfirms the upcoming Mario Kart for Wii to have online battle
features, adding the ability to have 16 players go head-to-head
simultaneously. The report also reveals the ability to perform mid-air
tricks for those itching to show off their karting skills whilst vying
for first place.

Mario Kart Wii to feature 16-player online battles
By Mark Raby
Thursday, September 06, 2007 14:13
Redmond (WA) - Nintendo may be ready to step up its online gaming
presence, as it is reportedly working on a 16-player Wi-Fi mode in the
upcoming Mario Kart game.
According to a report in the Official Nintendo Magazine, the Wii Mario
Kart game, which has not yet received an official title, will feature
online races of up to 16 people. That's the same number of players
allowed in the Playstation 3 game Warhawk, which Sony considers to be
its most ambitious online project so far for the console.
Amid the list of features mentioned in the article, the last paragraph
starts with, "Did we mention online battles cater for up to 16
players?" It offered no details beyond that.
A couple other features were announced, including the ability to
perform in-air stunts for the kart-racing characters, a first in the
Mario Kart series. The article also confirmed that battle mode would
be playable online, in addition to standard race mode. Also, tracks
from Mario Kart DS will reportedly make their way to the Wii game,
with improved 3D graphics. According to Nintendo, Mario Kart DS has
been the most successful online game for the DS.
Mario Kart Wii is currently planned for a spring 2008 release.

Mario Kart Wii to support 16-person online multiplayer
by Blake Snow | 09/06/2007 | 7:12:09 AM PST
The upcoming issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine out of Europe
reportedly reveals new details surrounding Mario Kart Wii, chief among
them being online multiplayer support of up to 16 players.
The news comes via image scans of the magazine as provided by Go
Nintendo.
While information was sparse, the scans reveal online multiplayer
support of up to 16 players, online battle mode, mid-air stunts, and
the inclusion of recreated Mario Kart DS tracks.
Nintendo proper has yet to confirm any such details, but the game is
expected sometime in spring 2008.

Mario Kart Wii details just 'healthy speculation'
Don't get too excited about Mario Kart Wii sporting 16-player online
play. It's just speculation says ONM.
September 06, 2007 - The UK's Official Nintendo Magazine has issued a
statement insisting that the details it published in its latest
edition regarding Mario Kart Wii and its 16-player online Battle Mode
are just "healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an
official announcement from Nintendo."
Although it called the details 'facts', ONM's statement continued: "We
are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our
readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this
has caused."
We'd like to hear your thoughts. Is it a cover-up, genuine
speculation, or just a stupid test of everyone's gullibility?

OMN retract story on Mario Kart Wii features as "speculation"
Posted by Daniel Vuckovic on 09.06.07
The Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) has issued a retraction for the
new Mario Kart Wii information that originated from scans earlier
today. The Official Magazine earlier reported features such as 16
players online, a stunt mode and that the game contained every DS
track along with brand new courses. However in a new report released
ONM states that this was pure speculation on their part and not an
announcement by Nintendo.
This retraction is just the latest in a long stint of lies and mis-
information published by the magazine. The article in the magazine
clearly states that the fact that you can now pull off stunts, the
fact that DS tracks will be recreated on the Wii, and the fact there
will of course be new exclusive tracks. So either the magazine truly
is "speculating" on this news or they stepped on someone's toes and
released the information early, we are willing to guess the former.
Either way it's shoddy journalism.
