GP Krakow
So who else is going to this and how cheap is it over there? I've
heard that stuff is very cheap so I don't want to change lots of money
as they don't use euros, anyone have a rough idea?

Seems quite a bit cheaper than Spain, but never been.

Myself and Chris Moss from up this end are already booked on flights,
and we're probably going to stay at the Crown Piast Hotel - not far
from the site and looks pretty opulent. It's on an "off season" half
price deal :) There are a few more thinking of joining us, but none
have booked yet. Pussies :)

If your bank is decent you could take out a minimal amount of Zloty
here, and then make a cash machine withdrawal over there for however
much more you need - I know my bank (the RBS) doesn't gouge too bad on
Rates/Charges. Also I believe many places there take Euro (many prices
for hotels, restaurants etc. are in Euro on the web) - again never
been but it sounds like a dual currency country...

There is a group of five of us going across from Bristol Wednesday.
As far as I know things are cheaper than the UK but you need to take
care when booking taxi's to the venue as you are likely to get over
charged if you don't agree a price beforehand.

Krakow is still a major city with lots of tourists so don't expect it
to be peanuts.

C you there,

Steve

Just replicating what Steve said: seems as though people have an image
of everything Eatern European being dirt cheap. While places like
Bratislava are, Krakow is a major tourist destination, even if we're
just going into the off season - 01/11/07 (for once well organized
Wizards - by choice?). I was there in '03, very busy, but was still
reasonably priced, like £1-1.50 a beer but more expensive than nearby
countries. Bound to have gone up, a known tourist destination, joining
EU etc.

About £20 pp pn at most hotels. You don't need to go to far away from
the Market Square to find much cheaper restaurants, cellar bars etc.
If you have time, you should go to the Salt Mines, the castle, and
Auschwitz-Birkenau - might put a downer on your trip, but is pretty
important. 5 Scots & an Italian are leaving a week today, going back
the following Tuesday - staying at the Alef and the Awiw.

We were unsure on accomodation as we booked flights a few months ago,
but in the end as we intend to see the city and enjoy the nightlife so
we booked a dorm room in the heart of the city which we have just for
us. There are alot of hostels and most are rated highly, though look
out for reviews if you are going to book one. We booked Hostel center
krakow at a cost of around 11 pounds a night.

Try

Hostel center krakow
Good bye lenin Hostel
Elephant on the moon
Tutti frutti Krakow (slightly more than the others but still cheap).

Re: GP Krakow
We're probably going to stay at the Crown Piast for about £29 pp pn
inc. breakfast - it's a 4 Star hotel set in it's own grounds less than
a mile from the venue. Would stay somewhere more central, but figure
we'll be taxiing one way or the other each night/morning anyway. We're
flying out Friday evening, returning Monday afternoon. Holiday days
are in short supply at this time of year :/

Re: GP Krakow
There's 4 of us going from Cambridge, sounds like we're going to have
a good sized British contingent!

Re: GP Krakow
Not going but I went there for a few years ago:

As Guy said, it's not as cheap as some of the other Eastern European
countries(Slovakia and Romania are the stupidly cheap places) but it
is a bit cheaper than the UK. I stayed in a pretty good hostel in the
Jewish quarter of Krakov for about £12 per night- it was a cafe
downstairs, though I don't remember the name of it.

And go to Auschwitz-Berkenau if you get the chance.
