Signin out procedures
When you come back to this country after bein out of it for a while,
it's like suddenly findin yourself in a mental ward. I'm not jokin.
Maybe that's the diffrence between life in Canterbury and life in Sarf
London.  I don't know.  All I know is that it's time to get out soon;
and thank God I'm goin to Rome.

The sooner the better. Maybe as early as next week if I can get
everythin organised. I'll keep you lot, wot has to remain here (and
teach!) in my prayers...

But tell me: do we need to sign out before leavin the ward or is it
still possible, as in the old days, just to go down to Dover and get
the hell out of here on the next boat?

Yes, well that's wot I was askin, exactly. <frown> I mean, for
example, does one need to sign at the door of the mental ward to say
one has read the latest copy of the diocrustian rag before one is
regarded as sane and allowed to leave?

Prolly eatin the pasta and drinkin the vino rosso and rememberin hiow
absolutely mad evrythin is in England. (e.g. a man just stopped me in
the street and said "Wot are you lookin happy for, MATE?" I smiled
and hurried on quickly, hopin he wasn't goin to come up behind me and
club me to death. It's not really a place to relax, is it?)

Did you ever feel in danger - from humans - on your little stroll
recently?

I only have a kitchen because it came with the house.

Not at all. Not once. And funny you should ask the question because
the timing is brilliant. I just came in through the door of this
internet cafe in Brockley, south London. I had to ask the mother with
a teenage boy, twice, to move out of the way as they were blocking the
door. "Excuse me please," then repeated after no response, "Excuse me
please." The response: a torrent of abuse, saying she'd heard me the
first time and an outrageously inapproipriate accusation of racism!

I despair of this country. It is so depressinbg at times!
Particularly at the moment: there is a kind of collective gloom and
I've been struggling not to sccumb to everyone's glumness ever since I
came back from Spain. But hooray! I'm on the way out again. Tent
arrived this morning. Baggage gets collected tomorrow for Rome. The
bike is ready to go.

It is depressing to read of some of these incidents that you have
encountered. I can only conclude that this collective gloominosity is a
London or South East thing as I see no signs of it in these northern
parts. Maybe everyone around London is depressed that the house prices
in the area are going down and that soon people from lower income
families will be able to afford to move in next door, or maybe it is
beginning to sink in that the O'Lympics are just a few short years away
and that there will be no funding for any worthwhile causes until that
is well and truly out of the way. People around here remain cheerful in
spite of the currently gloomy weather.
