linux server & XP Client
Hi all

we've just inherited a school network that is running a fedora server (no
GUI) and xp clients. I have added 2 new users using the useradd command and
set the passwords but they cant logon. Can anyone assist with this problem?

Cheers

Re: linux server & XP Client
Error message on XP?
Server logs error messages?

Sorry to not be more helpful. I run a school's linux/xp network using SME
Server.

You might check that the user exists for samba too. Samba is the thing that
deals with interacting with Windows. Not too sure about the specifics,
since my server adds the user automatically wherever they are supposed to go
via a web page.

this may help though:

Hi Joe

the only error message is at the xp end when i try to log in as the new user
it just says couldnt log you on to the domain.

Re: linux server & XP Client
Can you confirm that other users on the same machine can log onto the
domain. I.e. that the machine is recognised as part of the domain. There
are some really unclear messages with the whole linux/windows thing. e.g.
an unrecognised machine on the domain will retrurn an 'unknown user' message
too.

I suspect though, that your pupil user does not exist as a samba user on the
server.

Re: linux server & XP Client
Have you tried asking at www.edugeek.net? A lot of very knowledgable
people there, most in a school environment.

Cheers

I have to echo Joe and say the same thing: you haven't added them as a samba
user.

Try:

smbpasswd -a username
