KS1/2 ICT assessment/level descriptors.   
Hello there,

I'm trying to bash ICT assessment into shape (we currently have nothing 
in place). In other main subject areas we have sub-levelled assessment 
with I can statements for the teachers/children to use.  Does anyone 
know of, or have anything that might serve this function in primary ICT?

I guess children's work should be printed off and put in a portfolio. 
Does anyone do this?  Can all usits be assessed this way or do some need 
a different approach to record keeping?

Is your e-mail address here valid MM?

Why? Not all work lends itself to a printout. This just ups ink costs 
and raises the expectations of pupils that everything they do on the 
computer ought to be printed out.

We keep their work in their own folders on the school network.

Hi Bev...

I take your point about printing...
I'm trying to think about marking the stuff see. At the moment, we have 
this heavy duty marking policy that requires us to put extensive 
comments on all the kids work (2 stars and a wish) and I'm not sure I'll 
manage to cover this electronically...

If you can find a way around the extensive comments on *every* piece of 
work, great! It sounds like overkill, detracts from other aspects of a 
teachers job and IMHO detailed comments should be kept largely for 
'key' pieces of work - either a piece of work specifically set to assess 
understanding or a piece which demonstrates achievement (or not) in a 
new skill.
Either way, whether you have to continue the extensive commenting or 
whether you can confine it to seminal pieces, how about something as 
simple as a text document?
Either 
one (possibly just Notepad or Wordpad) to accompany a piece of work, 
named the same (or with an added 'com' for comments or 'TA' for teacher 
assessment in the file name)
or
one RTF document per child, incorporating comments from all the work, 
with hyperlinks to the relevant child's work included above or below the 
comments
(advantage - can be stored separately from the pupil's work yet because 
of the hyperlinks are able to access relevant info easily; disadvantage 
- the hyperlinks don't work if you ove the folder, eg. archive it at 
thwe end of the year... but then the RTF file can always be dropped into 
the same folder as the work at that point.)

This one isn't in regular use, but it's disposable if it fills with spam 
and should be an acceptable first point of contact of you want to find 
out more about the systems we're considering, being just ahead of where 
you're at:
bevsmail at lycos then its the co and uk ending with the dots in the 
appropriate places.

We use Primary ICT assessment which enables you to create portfolios of 
evidence, linked to the objective supported. It is directly linked to the 
QCA units tho'.
I have recently been working on developing a series of  I can statements for 
all areas of ICT.
I also developed a set of spreadsheets based on my own SOW which could spit 
out a level and sub-level , but I would immediately question the judgement 
of anyone who wanted to do that.
