.pdf Editor prices?
Hi,

Could anyone recommend a good price for software to enable us to edit/
create PDF files please? We are a LA secondary school in Notts. Also
if anyone's received a good deal on Acrobat, please let me know!

Many thanks for any help received.

Is "free" a good price?

http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

This is for creating rather than editing .pdf files.
You create the document or whatever in another program then use CutePDF
to create a version in .pdf format.

Or, you could just use OpenOffice from the start and save as pdf in the same
application.

We use PDFCreator available from

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

Free download and can make secure PDFs - handy for schools as it
enables you to create resources but prevent pupils from printing out
or copying (if you choose!)

Import of pdf files has a lot of discussion on the Openoffice lists.
Some form of import is likely but not sure how long off and the
degree to which editing can take place is also uncertain but worth
watching out for. Its a bit of a shame that OOo is quite so big or
everyone could just download it and use it instead of Acrobat reader
sending each other ODF files instead of pdf. The advantages would be
generally smaller files than with pdf and everything is fully editable.
Downside is that if there are different fonts on different systems the
print spec might change a bit which is the real benefit of pdf. You can
guarantee a pdf file will print identically on any system.

Well it does assume all pdf output devices interpret the content in the
same way which probably isn't quite true but is probably more likely to
give consistent results than using word processing documents.
Personally I'd be quite happy to see odf files passed around instead of
pdf because they are usually a lot smaller and I can freely edit them if
I want to.

A couple of options which might be usable. If you have MS Office 2003
then use the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer to print the PDF -
it prints as an MDI file which you can then open with the document
imaging program and OCR it; it can then be edited.

If you have MS Office 2007 then you can print to the "Send to OneNote
2007" printer. This sends the file to OneNote; you can't edit the PDF
but if you have forms to fill in or you want to annotate etc an existing
PDF then you can do that.

Give the Nitro PDF Edit Pro trial a go. It's both a creator and
editor. It sells for about $99 but would probably be cheaper if you
bought more than one.
