small problem with PC - any advice
Sometimes, when I go to use my pc, previously left on standby, I
cannot get it to show anything on the monitor, even though I know it
is running - green led, fan noise, etc.

The only way I can use it is to hold the power button in until it
shuts down then restart it, complete with scandisk check.

None of the usual things work - wakeup key, mousewiggling, space bar
hammering, monitor power off and on again

What causes this and how do I get to use it without doing something
so drastic?

Same here - when logging off from one user so as can change to another.
Would be very grateful for a cure.

Can't you just press the power button instead of holding it down. Don't like
any of my pcs going into stand by because of this.

Or perhaps some of us thought we would give others a chance to answer.

This could be a number of problems ...

Here is an idea of some of the things I have seen cause it and what
was done to get round it.

1 - Graphics Driver: make sure you have the latest graphics drivers. I
have previously had issues with Nvidia and ATI drivers that had issues
with waking the card up after power management set the display to go
to sleep.

2 - Windows Updates: Check how you have your automatic updates
scheduled. Set it to download the update in the background ask you to
patch it. This was spotted when there were a large number of Office
updates (about 4 months ago but it could be longer) and it was trying
to do the install in the background.

3 - Certain AV Products: Norton killed my wife's machine time after
time ... eventually I uninstall it ... then had to do a clean build of
XP because it just would not come of the machine properly. I put
Grisoft AVG Free on to start with ... and eventually moved to F-Secure
with no complaints

4 - Drives not waking up: In the power management make sure your
drives are not set to go to sleep.

5 - 3rd party screen saver: Just plain nasty ... including a few of
the BBC ones.

6 - Overheating processor: Reapplied the paste and it was happy

Once you have rebooted the machine have a look in the event viewer to
see if it has moaned about anyhting in particular.
Boot into safe mode and leave it running to see if it still hangs.
Once back in normal mode check to see if there are any proccesses that
seem to take a lot of memory or processor.

I know ... lots more questions and ideas, but hopefully it might help
to narrow down the problem.

Can't you just press the power button instead of holding it down. Don't like
any of my pcs going into stand by because of this.

So I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said "Analogue."
I said "No, just a watch."
