question about TI84 Plus SE in AQA A Level Maths exams
Hello, I'd be grateful if someone could tell me whether use of the
TI84 Plus SE calculator is allowed in AQA A Level exams.
I have asked AQA and they just say what is not allowed, namely CAS
calculators and ones that are rigged up to communicate with the
outside world etc., and that candidates are not allowed to bring in
stored programs. They say there is no official list of what
calculators are allowed - which is understandable.
They referred me to the following JCQ document.
http://www.ocr.org.uk/Data/publications/administrative_handbooks_guides_and_regulations/JCQ_Instructions_for_Conducting_Examinations.pdf
I would like to nail this down completely.
The TI84 Plus SE is not a CAS calculator but it comes with pre-loaded
applications. Presumably all of these must be deleted from the
calculator.
Is it possible to do this?
Can someone please tell me 100% whether this specific calculator is
allowed.
Many thanks!

Speak to the exam co-coordinator at your school / exam venue. It is they who
will have to decide "on the day" and this isn't the sort of thing you want
to be "fighting out" just before your exam.

I'm afraid it's not that easy - I am asking on behalf of my daughter
who is a private candidate at a non-course-running exam centre, who
only referred me to AQA and the JCQ doc. I don't know why AQA were not
clearer - maybe I got the person before lunch or something! :) I was
hoping that someone could answer who had actually used a TI84 Plus SE
at AQA Maths 'A' Level. It is the top non-CAS (non-Computer-Algebra-
Systems) calculator that Texas Instruments make (who are the world's
biggest manufacturer of calculators for educational use). So I am sure
many other people must have asked the question and got the answer. In
terms of functionality it is little different from the TI83 Plus, but
the point is that it is different, and as you rightly say, one needs
to be sure.
I have now read the JCQ doc somewhat more closely, and realise that
rather than saying 'stored program' (which would excite barrack-room
lawyers, because any calculator with e.g. a sine or y^x function uses
stored programs), they use the rather clearer formulation 'retrievable
information'.
Unfortunately this doesn't tell me whether there is a way to wipe all
such information (including all 'preloaded applications' to use TI
jargon) from the calculator and be able to get them back again later,
e.g. from a computer hard disc using a USB connection! The manual
doesn't make this 100% clear.
I remember when I took Maths 'A' Level I had a TI-59 from which I was
sure to remove the 'master module', as well as clear the program
memory. No-one checked but today when there are more powerful
calculators I think there is more of an issue.

biggest manufacturer of calculators for educational use).

Re: question about TI84 Plus SE in AQA A Level Maths exams
Why don't you ask TI themselves how to wipe the applications? - the
following link gives info about what can be used,
http://education.ti.com/sites/UK/downloads/pdf/TI-TimeWinter2006-7.pdf
and I am sure an email to TI Education Service (ti-cares@ti.com) would
help!

Speak to the exam co-coordinator at your school / exam venue. It is they who
will have to decide "on the day" and this isn't the sort of thing you want
to be "fighting out" just before your exam.
